17" spare that clears big brakes
Sunday, July 29, 2007 10:52 AM
Does anyone know of a spare out there I could get that can clear 12" big-brake setups, and HOPEFULLY fit in the spare tire well? I've heard something about maybe a Vette spare, and possibly getting the lug pattern drilled to 5x100mm, is that a doable/safe option?

I haven't got one yet, but I think a 17" WRX STi turbo will work

the cadillac el dorado (and similar cadillacs) have 16" spares that clear front 12" brakes. only problem is that they are 5x115 pattern, and you CANNOT redrill steel wheels. also, those spares are rather large and wont fit in the spare tire well. so you're gonna have a tough time.

i personally found a 15" spare in 5x100 and 57.1 bore that fits my daytona rear brakes (11.25). it happens to also be a tight fit in the well. got it off an older chrysler (sebring i think)

takes more time, but it will solve the issue and just put it on the rear(I am asuming that the rear is smaller), and the rear up to the front.
good idea though

My tC came with a 17" donut spare, which has plenty of clearance for the tC's brakes (which are in the 10-11" range, can't remember exactly off the top of my head).

How about a stock 16" wheel?

Anyone ever thought about a VW wheel? I know the wheels are 5 x100, but they would have to be drilled out to our bore. Only reason I ask is cause my girl has a Jetta GLI with a 12" brakes stock that her 16" steely clears.

any stock wheel wont fit in the spare tire well (flush w/ the carpet cover of course), mostly all spares i've seen are steelies which CANNOT be bored out, and 16" spares (as i said, i found one for a caddy) are HUGE compared to our stock one. my 15" chrysler steelie just BARELY fit in there.

You know I just thought of something great... ESC makes spacers for VW's that are really nice. What if we made a spacer that would go over our hub and then the outside could be the VW/Audi size. Then we could use the VW/Audi wheels that are made to clear big brakes that come on those cars. Plus think of all the BBS wheels we could have....

Forgot to add that use of the F-body studs would be a must. If I remember right some member is cutting stuff out of alum for us like knobs for titls. Maybe he could do one to try this out for us. hehe

STi is 56.1mm centerbore and 5x114.5

Non-STi is 56.1mm centerbore and 5x100

Might be able to squeeze an SRT-4 spare (15x4, 57.1mm centerbore, 5x100) over the Wilwoods....

^ an srt4 spare will not fit over wilwoods if its a donut, it has to be a full size. and thats even if srt4's stock wheels even fit the wilwoods.

ah hell. Well, was worth a shot.

Can't say what the difference is in the srt4 Wilwood kit and the J Wilwood kit is as far as clearance, but the stock wheel (16's) clears theirs.

I'll see if I can track a set of SRT wheels down and test it...

well i would go get yourself a Audi TT spare. the older ones before the newly redesigned TT's shared the same 5x100 bolt pattern as the Golf/Jetta/Beetle did. the difference is the TT came with 12.3 front brake rotor.

TT brakes, about 1/2 down the page

the thing is, some TT's have a spare donut, some do not. ive found lots of people complaining that they found out the hard way that they didnt have a spare tire in their trunk. in the newer TT's, i think Audi just puts in one of those kits with puncture seal in it, or they come on run flats.

unfortunately, i couldnt find too much on the audi TT's spare tire size, but what i did find seems to point in the direction that its a 18" spare.
looks like they have a T125/70R18

used spares for sale... again, about 1/2 way down page

the center bore should also be the same as a j-body, as the Golf's and Jetta's have a 57.1 mm center bore.

now i found a website where a guy bought what looks to be a TT spare tire for his R32 (they come with a can of fix a flat and a compressor). he said the 18 inch spare does not fit the front, but fits the rear.

R32 website

the R32's rotors are 12.2's on the rear and 13.6's on the front.

* Front Brake Rotor Diam x Thickness (in): 13.6 x
* Rear Brake Rotor Diam x Thickness (in): 12.2 x
* Rear Drum Diam x Width (in):

looks like this might be a viable option. some one should call up a VW dealer or start hitting the yards to find out more info

<hint>.... Darkstars ..... </hint>

But per here: http://www.tirereview.com/files/PDF/fitment1.pdf , the 2000+ have the 5x100 and 57.1 centerbore.

Car-part.com lists the 18" compact spare for the 2000-2k1 model year.

Yay

just because you have an 18" compact spare doesn't mean its going to fit in the wheel well. my 15" donut just barely fit in there with the stock scissor jack.
