well i didn't know where else to post this except off topic, but i just bought a powder coating system and im teaching my self to use it. And well i want to powder coat my rims because there all scratched up and was wondering if anyone knew if you have to have the rim completely striped of paint (bare metal) for the powder to stick to it? anyone know?
Yes, they should be stripprd down to bare metal.
yep hes right bare metal or it will never stick, and make sure u clean them very very good, no oils, wax, dirt anything will cause the powder to look like crap....also don't go to thick it will crack, and don't bake it to long it will burn up... sorry i used to do powder coating and was always worried when i did rims i was gonna mess them up, bad thing is the first set i did was corvette rims, talk about nervous!! lucky me i did an awesome job!!
Derek do you have any good ways besides sanding to completely remove the paint.
stripper or media blasting.
hmm looks like im buying a sand blaster now.
be carefull if u use a sand blaster u might pit the aluminum, personally i used aircraft remover after sanding, to get into all the spots you cant reach, like the lug holes and around the lip of the rim is harder to get the sand paper in..... i would recommend using a mask while using that tho its some strong stuff
i know all about that aircraft stripper, my friend use it on his car and it destroyed the paint which was the purpose i just never thought it would be that good. but i was thinking about using a sand blaster with the plastic pellets. also my rims have curb rash like no other so i was going to use lab metal to fill in the scratches. what do you think?
that should be ok, but unless you already have the plastic pellets it would probably be cheaper to use the aircraft remover.... but thats all up to you, u better post some pics of them when you get them stripped and coated i wanna see how they look

always go with the stripper...cant lose
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
i guess stripper ftw! im going to post pic's of step by step. the only thing stopping me at the moment to start this is the powder. I have some red, but im looking for a high gloss black. I think i found some
here for 5 bucks a pound that im going to use.
Find a place in your area that does customer sand blasting if possible. There is one place out here that has 8 bays for do it your self sand blasting and they have different kind of sands for different applications
