Im looking at the Motegi SP5 rims with the deep lip option, and i cant decide between 17's or 18's on my car. The reason being i live in northern Virginia, where the roads can be hellish for lack of maintenance and ungodly amounts of speed bumps. now my only problem with the 18's is im worried there is not enough sidewall on the tires to prevent you smacking the rim on any pothole or bump that crosses your path. but then again 17's look kinda small....
any opinions with facts to back them up would be appreciated.
I'll eventually take the time to put something here. I swear.
A good set of 18s can withstand a reasonable amount of abuse, and I would think in most cases the driver's butt will complain before the wheels will. A 40-series tire still has enough rubber to withstand typical obstacles. If the roads are truly awful, I would think you might choose 17s simply for the sake of a tolerable ride.

if they have a lip, get 18s because after a month or so you'll be kicking yourself that you got 17s
