Full Size Spare Hold Down
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 12:16 PM
Well, this started out as a venture to somehow secure my full size spare in my trunk, to keep it from sliding around, and just look better then being where ever it wants.

This is what I was thinking at first. It was gonna be 1/8th inch steel and work pretty well.

Well here is what I came up with. The steel plate came out of a scrap bin at work with the holes already drilled. A buddy of mine (LNHIV) cut the plate in half, so I could use it to sandwich my spare tire well cover, which by the way is ¼ inch thick high density particle board. It was about half inch thick, then redrilled the holes to proper size, and tapped the plates. He then made a rod to hold the tire down, that is .5 inch bolt threads on one end (for the plate) and 12x1.5 on the other end for the lug nut. I have a spline drive chrome lugnut on there now so it look better.

Simple but effective, the only issue is idealy it should be able to hold up a crash so parts don't go flying.

its all stainless, so i am pretty sure that the cover would break before it does....hopefully i never have to fine out.

what are you doing about the floor not being level.

That would not be that much above the trunk floor I'd think. I had thought of having a full size spare since I have a dented at the bead wheel still on the car until I can afford new tires. I already bought another 14 in wheel from the boneyard. My temp spare is worn down to the belts due to a bad strut from awhile ago. That is a pretty good set up; more than what I'd be able to come up with (read shoved in the spare well.). Nice job.

The floor is pretty much level. The cover is flush within 1/8th of an inch. The floor has a joggle in is to that the cover sites flush, plus I beveled the edges of my board.

I wanted the cover there. so this was my other option...for my intentions this is fine. I will have the jack and all that in the well still once i make a tray for it.
