18´s; much power loss?
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 10:51 AM
I was thinking about getting 17" or 18" wheels, my motor is stock for now; was wondering if there was a noticble power loss or not when bolting up 18" wheels?

My car is a auto right now with a autotrans interceptor, but will be a 5spd come spring; almost have all the parts for the swap.

On a 1/4 mile you might notice a difference (depending on weight), but I doubt the butt dyno would feel a thing unless you had some really really heavy rims.

no not really, i'll bet you all the money i got that there's 15's out there that are heavier than 18's, so you can't really make that statement. its all in the style and construction of the rims, but going from your average 17's to average 18s you wont notice a difference. And I don't care what you say i've had every size rims from a 14" to my current 19's, so i'm not just speaking outta my ass....

I definitely noticed a difference between my 18's when I had them and the stock 14's

I even notice a difference now between my 16" GTZ wheels and my stock 15's, but then agian GTZ's are heavy as hell.

When you figure every 8-10lbs of rotational mass is equal to 100lbs of static mass you see why there is a difference. That doesn't include the fact you are moving the weight farther from the center of rotation then upgrading to a larger rim making it even harder for the motor to turn.

and your 14" steel wheels are gonna weigh similar to your 19" aluminum wheels cuz steel is heavier than aluminum depending on brand, quality, price, etc. i prefer the stock 95-99 z wheels over my 18's although they are both aluminum . think about it 16x6 < 18x8

I guess in the overall scheme of things, there isn't going to be THAT much power loss.

But, I know that in my experience I definitely noticed a difference between the stock 16's and some 18's I used to have. I could "throw around" the 16's much easier with the gas pedal and steering wheel. Not saying it was good or bad, just saying I could feel the difference.
