I had a brilliant idea. Maybe I saw it someplace before but how hard is it to remove the cigarette lighter next to my steering wheel and cut a hole to put in my GPS? I could plug the back permanently and just plug it in when it needs charged. I drew up a picture to show you what I mean. I just hate that plastic suction cup that falls off my windshield every 2 minutes and this would look very cool.
First off, I doubt you have brilliant ideas...
That being said...how are you holding the GPS in there? Is it going to just float in the hole? And you realize the dash is curved there and your gps is probably flat for the most part? Do you know there is nothing behind there for the GPS to rest on?
Short answer, yes it can be done, many people probably have (my gps has been mounted in my bezel for a long time now). BUT, it's going to take some fiberglassing, and designing a sort of holder for the gps to mount behind the bezel, and a little wiring to do it the right way..(if you are going to permanently mount it, then you wont be able to use the power button, so you need to either keep it removable so you can manually turn it on/off, or splice the wiring to an ignition source like I did so it turns on and off with your car)
You're gonna want someone else to do this for you, end of story.
could you do it for me? i would pay you 100 dollars.
"You again!!!"
It's a nice idea.
Evilution, can you take some pictures and show us your setup?
Also, regarding the wiring, it's a brilliant idea to thave the device switch on with the car. This subject can be elaborated upon. I just might do this(in the future), because I just starting reading upon fiberglassing and cf. And, by reading upon I mean watch videos on youtube, and a few how-to's here.
Evilution...isn't the GPS power wiring have like 5 different colors inside of it or is it just one color silver or bronze like the 18 gauge wiring I have? if it is just one color that would be easy to run to my switched fuse source so it comes on only when the key is turned. hard part now is just fiberglassing it in. my offer still stands and i won't back down. this will be the perfect oppurtunity to finally meet me and beat the sense into me.
why don't you replace one of your vents with the gps instead it might be a little easier and you could actually see it when you are driving and you dont lose your airbag
i thought about that, but the vent size is still too small. that is a good idea though, but i still have no idea how to go about this. a very detailed how to with some photos would be awesome, but this project still seems too far out of my n00bish hands.
Justin - NO
Hassoun - Yeah I'll get some pics up this week sometime. And yeah, the wring was a little more than plug and play...I used the regular 12v adapter that you usually plug into a power source, and cut it up and ran the power to an ignition source (I think I used the wire that runs into the combination switch that was ignition specific)

First off, there is a how to on some fiberglassing work. Not how to mold your GPS into your dash. Its called custom for a reason. And yes your NOOBISH HANDS are well known here on this forum. And i personally suggest, once again, that until you have money and someone willing to do the work for you. DONT MOD ANYTHING. simple as that
who would do this kind of work that knows how?
I know a couple people. But none that have enough patience to deal with you, which, from what ive heard is a lot.
This thread will never get deleted either...
Why would you put a gps where the cig lighter is? Just use the suction cup and mount it to the left of your dash cluster. This way, when it tells you which direction to turn, you aren't trying to crane your neck around the steering wheel to see what it's showing you.
Also, if you want to stay around here long, you'll read how-to's and learn to do this @!#$ on your own. Start with something small and work your way up.
There are few places on your dash that are harder to see than where your cig lighter is... I can't think of a single worse place to put it other than down by your knees...
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

The only person who actually really helped me with this. Thank you!

Fiberglass how to... google.com... time and lots of sanding.
Hey a thread that brought me out of OT LOL.
Man I dont know anyone anymore and I've been here for years.
Dude... just put it on the windshield with the suction cup... thats what I do.. its not like you have a show car or just happen to be good at fiber-glassing. If you try this right now your going to regret it. One big thing I thought of is, what do you do when the GPS finally gets old and quits working and now you have a hole in your dash that isnt the same size as any GPS you can buy? You'd have to do it all over for the new one.
I need to come out of OT more.

yep i thought about that yesterday after everyone posted. i am going to use that EZPass velcro tape to tape it on like in the first picture I showed. then when it needs recharged I will just recharge it. Maybe it will stay on with the power cord, maybe not. here is the stuff i am talking about:
http://www.amazon.com/Velcro-Stick-on-Auto-Adhesive-Backed/dp/B001ADB19U/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_text_b
the stuff works amazingly well, tons better than regular velcro. i tried regular velcro and it wasn't strong enough, but this stuff is like a zipper it locks so tight, it is awesome.

I was waiting for you to post.
I could do the bezel or a custom pod for you, but it would require you sending me your bezel and GPS

Good luck getting it to stick onto the dash pad. It might hook together and stick to the GPS but the dash pad is another story. Plus have you thought about what happens with the sticky glue they use on that and heat? It will heat up and come undone just like your suction cup. I don't understand why people can never get the suction cups to work. I have had 2 different GPS units and never had and issue with them coming undone. Thee only time they do its during the summer when the car is sitting out in the sun all day. But guess what I hop in the car stick it back up and drive away and it stays. make sure you are using a flat part of the windshield. Also they make these dash mounts here is one that is ok
http://www.proclipusa.com/ but they make better ones just run a few searches for them.
Disclaimer:
Dey see me Trollin' Dey hatin' for trollin dey trying to catch me ridin dirty.
dang cavie freak those pro clips look awesome. i already ordered the velcro. it is made especially for hot weather so the sticky doesn't come undone. the stuff will work i am pretty sure of it. its the strongest velcro ever and i read a review of someone doing the same thing i am and it worked awesome for them. thanks again for your tips though.
Why don't you mount it like mine:
I used a small screw to hold the base (the plastic disc with double sided tape on it) of the gps to the dash pad. The cup maintains it's suction because I countersunk and siliconed the base so the screw head is flush.
