Man, I hate my local dealership.
My 03 Cav is still under warranty and the horn just quit working - I think there is a bad switch in the steering column because horn still works when you lock the car and the fuse is good.
So...they will have to remove my entire steering wheel anyway to do the repair and/or diagnose the problem.
I have a new turn signal lever that I want to install because I somehow wore some of the lettering off the old one and I want to stay mint. I don't really want to go through the hassle of pulling the wheel, working around the airbag, etc. I figured that since it was only TWO SCREWS and a simple wire harness plug-in, that they would be decent enough to give me a good price on installing it since the streering wheel would be aprt ANYWAY.
Nope - not my dealership. They want to charge me 179 bucks for something I could do in about 1 minute.
What a bunch of freakin crooks. They must think I am a total moron.
Now will someone PLEASE take pity on me and tell me what tool I need to get the front steering wheel off? I'm not talking about the puller, I'm talking about the 4 holes or so that face the front of the car, that I cannot see into to see how to unscrew.
Thanks.
Might Jabba has begged for your aid.
a torq bit, size t35 i think, not sure but a torq bit does it

You don't need to remove the steering wheel to change the turn signal switch. And the reason they are charging you is for the labor in which to do it. They don't have to take off the steering wheel to check the horn either. Just thought I'd tell you that to save you some time with changing the switch.
Hi, coolfire
I appreciate the input, but I don't think it is correct (I wish it was).
As I explained in another thread, I removed the top steering column piece and loosened the side screw on the turn signal lever. However, the front screw is completely hidden behind the steering wheel and can't be turned unless you had a REALLY tiny socket set or something.
Plus, there seems to be a little metal contact that fits into a groove in the steering wheel that lets the lever know when you have finished the turn so that it will release.
I am definitely gonna have to take the thing off to get back there.
I'll try the torque bit like mikec suggested - hopefully the same size as the ones that hold the dash together.
Mighty Jabba thanks you.
I believe it's a combination T-15 and 7mm...either would work for the bolts to the airbag...although my 00 only had 2 bolts holding it on...

buy a REALLY tiny socket set. unless they changed it for the 03+ (and there is no reason to have changed it), then it is still accessible w/o having to pull the wheel. they sell socket sets with a 50 degree angle on them. same thing with screwdrivers/torx wrenches. i think i may have used an allen wrench to get mine off. anyway you look at it, its gonna be cheaper and easier than pulling the whole wheel.

you need to remove the cover around the column , and use a 7mm wrench
ive done alot of the switches when i worked for the chevy dealer , and when you get paid under warrenty to do it , the faster the better , LOL
allthough if ida been doing the work on your car and you asked , since i woulda been knee deep any ways , i woulda said slip me 5 - 10 for lunch
but the 2 dealers i worked at were cool about the small stuff
Is there a secret way to remove the bottom steering column cover? Mine won't come off because of the ignition cylinder and the steering wheel adjustment rod being in the way.
If I could get that off, I think I can just barely get to that nut.
