i was just wondering if instead of drilling small holes in the plastic if you could just lay down some fabric, like t-shirt material or fleece like everyone else says and put resin on top and sand then paint? would it work or should you use the drill and glass both sides method?? any input is appreciated
i dont think that will work, because with no holes, the resin/glass still has nothing to "grip" onto. i drilled a few small holes, and just put heavy resin through em and on the back, with minimal glass mat, and worked fine. strong as can be
what are you glassing? the project i speak of is when i shaved the cig lighter, i drilled the holes, then took a small piece of shirt and glued it level, then went to work with the resin/glass mat

You still need to drill the holes, but unless you are adding gauges or something you dont need to fiberglass it to get the smooth look. Just sand it down. If you are shaving something, then use 4040 or fusor 142.
i meant use hot glue or spray ahesive to hold down the material an put the resin on top of that sorry i didnt mention that the first time. i have already sanded and painted now i want to add stuff like monitors and a rack for xbox ontroller and monitor remotes.
It might work, but why take the chance, it only takes 5 more minutes to drill a few holes. If your worried about messing up your current one, then go to the junk yard and grab a few extra pieces.
It would suck to get everything all done and then a few weeks after you get it in, it all falls apart and cracks.
if u drill holes, and fiberglass it on the top part and u do it right then no need to fiberglass the underside too, but ya def dont fiberglass unless u are shaving something or unless u just enjoy sanding alot, lol, later

i have fiberglassed before but i just wanted to know if anyone tried this that way i knew if it worked or if i should try it. i just thought if it worked it might save me some money in materials. thanks for all the input
It will still take the same amount of materials, basically. You dont have to add FB matt to the back, just add a few coats of resin back there, that will work fine. By doing it the way your talking about your bringing in more materials and more time, by having to cut the fabric, and then hot glue that down, and then having to soak that fabric in resin which takes way more resin than it would if you were to just put two coats on the back.
