well i took the dash appart (just remove the top dash pad)
unbolt the cluster go it your house
now you see 4 green socket, remove them, the lights are in there, now change or paint the lights to your liking!!

pretty easy its an hour job if you count the time to desolder the lights from their sockets

when you say that you painted the underside of the needles do you mean the bottom where the light shines up through or the back side facing the cluster?

you said you put in some 194 bulbs i thought the cluster used special bulbs, they have a green bases, do they come in different colours?

when you put your bulbs in did it make it brighter or whiter or both?

its a lot brighter now and no they are not special bulbs, just 194 bulbs soldered to the metal pegs on the green sockets

oh, there soldered to the green pegs, do 194 blubs come in red or if they do is it a painted on red that will burn off?

sunstealth -- the bulbs that you put in are they like a super white, are they like the ones with a light blue tint to them making them whiter?

what watt is the stock bulb the 194 blub is 5 watt right

if the 194 bulb is a higher wattage it pro runs hotter could it melt something in the cluster?

the 194 bulb is the same bulb that is in the front corner lense right

I used humbrol model paint for the needles

and i think i removed the bulbs from their socket by cutting the wires!

its the same bulb that the corners

and it looked better, unfortunately when i was fixing my speedometer needle I sneezed and broke the needle, had to get a new cluster so now i have a completely stock cluster wich lit up blu with white needles!

I have a 98 Cavalier Z24. Is there a filter or film of some sort that would distort the color of the light coming through.

I was thinking of replacing the 194 cluster bulbs with blue superbright leds and wondering whether the outcome would be good looking or not.
