Has anyone attempted to dye their headliner black or a darker colour?
Just wondering how it turned out, and what product you used?

Thanks

Same here. dyed it black. used "fabric color" (yes, that was the name of the stuff on the can) from advance auto parts. 4 something a can. worked great. fabric is still soft after 3 years.

No, don't use spray paint.

The stuff I used was actually called "Fabric Color". It comes in a can like spray paint though.
It's great stuff. The headliner, sunvisors, and carpet all look and feel like a factory job.

I took all the stuff out and scrubbed it really really clean before I did it. You just spray it on like paint. It turns out really well. I think it only took me 4 cans, but I had the graphite interior.

FIrst, it's called "Vinyl and Fabric Paint" and it's made by Duplicolor. They (should) stock dark red, medium gray, shale (dark) blue, white, flat black and gloss black. It'll be in the paint section of Advance. They also might carry red, yellow, blue and silver. I can't remember if those colours were discontinued or moved into the paint plan-o-gram (yes, I used to work at Advance.. today was my last day actually).

Personally, I'm a little hesitant to use it on my headliner since I tested that stuff out on a piece of headliner I riped out of the 88 Cavy I'm restoring and it made it feel slightly stiff.. but then again, this headliner was almost paper thin and was probably slightly dry-rotted, so that probably had something to do with it. I need to get something closer to the fabric of the headliner and test it on that.

Secondly, what's involved in recovering the headliner? Is it just spraying on some fabric adhesive and laying down the new fabric, or does it involve tearing off the old fabric and foam, then relining it with foam and then covering that with the new fabric? Oh and can you remove those blasted airbag stickers from the visors? I'd imagine painting over them comes out looking really @!#$ty.

Ok, no.
It was called "Fabric Color", and I'm pretty sure I got it at Advance( there is a 0.01% chance that it came from Autozone). It did not make my headliner stiff at all. It never made my carpet or sunvisors stiff either. I know what the @!#$ I'm talking about.

Um.. okay? I wasn't making that post to be a dick to you or anything man.. I was just telling him what I know for a fact the Advance stores I've been at have. It's been a while since I bought the stuff for my centre console.. so it may in fact be called "Vinyl and Fabric Color" instead of "Vinyl and Fabric Paint".

ACtually.. you're right.. it's called "Vinyl and Fabric Color".. provided this is what you're talking about:

But yeah.. if that's what you used then cool.. I'll have to try it out on my headliner. I only said *I* was hesitant about it making the fabric stiff because I tested it out on a piece of headliner from an 88 cavy. A piece that was very thin and most likely dry rotted.. which is probably why it felt slightly stiff to me.

Like I said before.. that post wasn't to try and make you look like you didn't know what you were talking about.

Sorry man. I misunderstood your post. Damn interweb. You can't see emotions like you can when you're talking to someone face to face. My bad.

Actually, the stuff that I used didn't have the "vinyl" before it. It was specifically for fabric only. It's been about 2-3 years since I did it, so I'm not sure if they still have it. I have to go get a new radiatior hose today, so I'll see if it was Advance or Autozone that had it.

Again, my apologies.

Nah man its cool. And they may have had a different type back then (brand or name.. dont know). I'd only been at Advance for a year and thats all I saw there. *shrug*

But yeah.. if you see the stuff specifically for fabric at like Autozone.. lemme know. Cuz like I said, I'm slightly hesitant about that stuff I was talking about.

I'll let you know man. I haven't made it down there today cuz I'm watching my little girl and it's been raining like crazy. I may go down when my wife gets home. I'll let you know though.
I was really suprised when I did it. I thought for sure the headliner and carpet would get hard. Shocked me when it didn't.

Just to update this post. I just installed my headliner today after dying and it turned out great! The headliner looks like it came from the factory black, and for only $15 I can't complain at all.

I think this would look great if some one could find some blue dye and attempt it.

Thanks for all the help and opions

What do you guys think about dying my headliner white? Has anyone done this color?

I was also thinking about dying my armrests as well. But I'm a little hestitant on that.

PS. I have a cayenne red 2 dr coupe with a drift kit and white APR DV8 18" rims - just so you know why I want to dye my interior white...

Re: Headliner

pull off coat hanger thingys in back, 5 plugs ( 2 up front 1 on each side, and one in back, visors come off, and moon roof switch if you have it, then make sure to disconect the light for the mirror and interior lamp, then pull off the interior parts that overlap it a little and pull back on the headliner, then just slide it out the door, dont bend it theres no need
