Removing *botched* tint job
Tuesday, March 22, 2005 8:00 PM
Anybody ever remove a bad tint job? The back window tint film on my Z is all botched up around the defrost and upper matrix. I bought the car that way, and had planned on getting it re-tinted. The time has come( I'm tired of the "underwater" effect in the rearview) and now I find out that they want to chanrge me twice as much for removing the old tint. I've tried peeling it off. It looks like I can get it off in one piece, however, I'm sure that this will leave a residue on the window and I'm not sure what it takes to get THAT off. Easy job or should I just pay the professionals ? Any info would be great!

It comes off the defrost elements real easy, it's just the glue that I'm not sure about...
I've looked around and the best deal I can get is for 160$CAD, that's 100$ for the tint and 60$ for the removal... thieves I say THIEVES!!!

The tint shot is going to tell you straight out that the dot matrix will not look right when the new tint is put on. They cant do anything about it. So if you do go that route i suggest getting a vinyl piece put on your back window to hide that like Sirk798 said....

get yourself some "tint off" and a razor blade.... or if you want do it quick, just get something with alot of ammonia in it.... thats what tint places use

A good tint shop will tint over the dot matrix with no problems.

There are tips on http://www.tintdude.com for removing tint.

I removed some crappy WalMart Gila tint from one of my past cars. What a nightmare. Almost all the adhesive stayed on the windows when I peeled it off. I used Windex, razor blades, and alot of elbow grease to remove it. The Windex would soften the adhesive to some extent, after waiting a few minutes after application. I had no tint on the back window, so no issues with defroster lines.

I got mine retinted yesterday for 80 bucks....20%

I removed my old tint...it was cake. On the rear i soaked the window with some high ammonia window cleaner and cut a trash bag (so you can lay it flat) and stuck it up over the tint. Then i sat my car in the sun and let my car run with the heater on for about 10 mins. Then i killed the car and let it set in the sun for another 20 mins or so. Then got inside and pulled the tint off in one whole sheet (after removing the trash bag). Lil bit of glue left but nothing a razor blade couldnt get.

Local guy told me 260 usd to remove and retint!!!!

I got it done for 80 yesterday!!!!!

But im gonna have to cut where the dot matrix is and do the vinyl thing...its hard to make it look good and i dont care who you are.

I used nail polish remover and a razor blade to remove mine. The nail polish remover with a sturdy cloth takes off the glue residue rather easily, at least it did for me when I had to do it.

heat gun, heat up the outside of the glass and just pull it off, don't know if it will affect your defroster though since i don't have one. @!#$ GM

When you get your tint, make sure not to cover the defroster top section on the back window or it will fog up in later times and also make sure to get 5 percent and nothing higher

A good tinter can do the whole back window with no problem.

5% tint is the way to go. can't see nothing through that. "who's looking at who?" is the real question

i will beg to defer on the dot matrix... i have tried everything, the only thing that works is to vinyl the OUTSIDE and cover it up but that severly restricts your vision. the dot matrix is anti-stick and the best of tinters still cant do anything about it. i took about 2 hours to really work at my own and then 2 weeks later did the same thing again. and it looks the best that i have ever seen. i took a jersey glove and rubbed the crap out of it, stuck pritty well. btw it is sunguard tint and it took us 3 times to get it even close to looking good before i gave it a little TLC.
