Carbon fiber: Is it any harder to set that normal fiberglass? Are there any special procedures you have to go through? I was watching a nova special on it this weekend and they were saying that the stuff *should* but backed at 140deg for 3 hours at 90 psi.
Is all the REALLY necessary????
Also, Can you paint carbon fiber?
yes its harder, fiberglass u can mess up the weave cause you sand/paint over it. with cf u dont want to get the weave messed up or it will look like crap alot harder to lay and successfully get it done right. If you are goign to paint it ... save yourself the time and money just fiberglass
I didnt think you were suppose to paint carbon fiber, but on pimp my ride this past sunday they did. Tho hood doesnt look carbon fiber since he painted it.
I'm not big I play big

carbon fiber is meant to be painted. people dont paint it because the want to show off that is carbon fiber. its a personal choice. i didnt paint my hood because i like the weave pattern in cf so i left it that way.
talk to ben from tabascoracing.com he does alot of carbon fiber work. he wraps alot of interior pieces
Carbon Fiber ISN'T any lighter? Then what the hell is the point of it other than some lines in the fabric???
if i remember correctly i think its a little STRONGER but im not sure very little difference in weight cause if you think about it its the hardener mixture that is the weight not cloth.
I'm pretty sure that it is lighter. I watched this special over the weekend about the making of the new Mclaren F1 and it had a whole shpeel about how the body is completely carbon fiber because it is the lightest material available.
Whether it is light enough to warrant double to triple the cost of fiberglass may be a completely different story however...
Its not lighter or stronger
Why?
#1: Only the top layer is carbon fiber, the rest is still fiberglass.
#2: Its a cheap, commercial (cosmetic) grade carbon fiber, it really isn't any stronger either.
If they made hoods out of the stuff they make the McLaren F1 out of, you'd be paying well over $1500 for a hood, and that would be for a cheap one.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
Ohhh... I guess I never thought of that... Fiberglass it is!

exactly
and shifted is right. the carbon we use for our cars really isnt that big of a deal compared to glass. most c/f hoods are glass hood with a top layer of carbon. i would say its still stronger and lighter than glass, but not by much.

I've always thought of CF as the sport compact tuners BLING BLING
thats why no one paints it. or if they do, only enough to make and design and to see that its still CF
Just for the sake of argument, IF someone were to make a piece like there dash board out of COMPLETELY carbon fiber instead of a fiberglass \ carbon mix. Would there be any significant difference in weight or are we talking ounces?
if you made it the proper way it would be probalby half the weight of the dash if not lighter then that. but most of us can't do it the proper way. proper way will be requiring u to make a mold, and to bake it or vacum bag it.
carbon fiber is allot lighter then fiberglass if done properly. yes the resin and such weights the same as fiberglass, but if it is made properly, the piece will be half as thick as a fiberglass piece is, so your using less material. but generally speaking most car companies cheapen out and dont make true carbon fiber pieces, its hard to find a carbon fiber hood that doesnt come with a fiberglass frame.

One sheet of grade A carbon fiber is as strong as 3-5 sheets of fiberglass. It's what all of the Indy cars are made out of (F1 cars) and It's what a lot of aeronautics (airplanes) equipment is made out of also. I just fiberglassed my dashpad in my car, sanded it smooth and covered it with one sheet of carbon fiber, resined it, and then clear coated it. After the million coats of clear were dry, I sanded it and buffed it. To be completely honest, it's really not that hard to work with and as soon as I have some pics of my dash I'll post them. It's got nearly identical properties as fiberglass does. I just compared it to making a fiberglass sub box when you use actual twill fiberglass sheets (woven sheets not fiberous sheets). As long as you have a decent grade of carbon fiber it's kind of hard to screw up the weave. But if you have the cheap cosmetic stuff, even if you do screw it up in one place, it's REALLY hard to notice. It's very paintable, planes are painted, F1 cars are painted ect. If someone's looking for the aeronautics quality c.f. I can probably get you some because the owner of the shipping place where I work, well he works as a sales rep for SGL Carbon Group they sell the stuff and he can get the scrap, for a price. I paid about 50 dollars a yard for mine (36"x50") but it was WELL worth it.
Officer: Do you know how fast you were going??
Me: Fast enough to get you to put down the coffee and doughnut!
Officer: (scowls)
Me: great, now I'm REALLY gonna get a ticket huh?

You should be ashamed for thinking you learned anything off of Pimp My Ride!!!!

the PROPER way would more than likely not include the pass. airbag. and if you remove that, you could also remove the metal bracing on the underside. if you do that, then the dash should weigh no more than 2-3lbs depending on how many layers you use. but like sndsgood said....that would involve making a mold and if you can make a mold, then you can def work with carbon too.
