I took off the carpet on my door panel (96 Cav 2 door) and I was planning on putting a different colour fabric over the existing piece. After thinking about it more, I decided it would look better to just paint the plastic. However, there are 2 GIANT X's cut into the plastic that were cut in to glue the carpet to the plastic door panel. Does anyone have an idea on what product to use to fill the X's so I can paint over it? It really looks ridiculous right now (anyone who has tried this and seen the X's will understand). Any input would be really appreciated! Thanks.
I used the word 'carpet' but you all know what I meant... the fabric arm rest =P
I don't think painting that area would be a good idea. If I was you, I'd re-wrap the foam part in tweed, suede, leather, or something like that if you want it to look nicer. even if you do figure out how to make it look smooth, it will be a very hard armrest and paint would wear away quickly

or fiberglass it like I am
^^^^^ if you wanna paint it i'd also say fiberglass

i'd say just tweed it... like i did.. i'd also had mine fiberglassed.. but then for some reason i t wasn't what i wanted so i stripped the fiberglass off after i was finished with it and put some black tweed there.. never regretted it since

Thanks for the tips... I have a new problem though, when I took off the armrest foam/fabric I didn't expect it to be going back on...kinda ruined both of them. I could probably fix them but I'm thinking when I try and stretch leather/tweed over the arm rest piece and its cracked down the middle, it wont hold well. Does anyone know if this is a part you can order? Or maybe just check salvage yards for them? I looked online and couldn't find anything. I think I'm screwed now lol, but if anyone knows if getting a Right and Left door panel arm rest piece is possible please let me know. Thanks!
try to fix it first. I don't know about leather because i've never used it, but if you use tweed you do not need to "stretch" it over the armrest. You just kind of spray the glue, lay the material over, and press it all down. You might be able to make it work. If that doesn't work, then i guess a junkyard is your best bet.

I'm in Canada (eh) St.Catharines Ontario to be exact. I'm going to try a junkyard first, but I have a feeling if there is a 95-99 cav door there, the guy wont want to sell me JUST the arm rest piece, ya know? No one wants a door with that off... so plan B may be to take a test drive of a cav and hope the dealer doesn't notice the arm rests are gone... =)
