dont get an aftermarket wheel unless your car is for show/racing purposes only. removing airbags is illegal and the car wont pass inspection. plus, youll break your teeth in an accident. I wanted an aftermarket wheel, but after looking into it....... bad idea.

you can keep your original wheel for when inspections come around

i just recently bought a sparco wheel and ran into some of the same questions. About inspections and being legal, not sure. Why would it be illegal to not have an airbag if some older cars dont even come equiped with airbags. As for the hub, there are several cheap ones out there but if i were you i would just go with a momo hub, i paid 65bux shipped from LTBMotorsports.com works and looks great. Also most of if not all sparco/momo steering wheels i believe are 6 bolts. Anyways back to the airbag situation... i also bought racing seats, 5point harnesses and fabed up a pretty heavy duty harnes bar. The only way i would suggest removing the airbags from your car is if you intend on having a safe seat/harness setup.

I'm from Kentucky... I have no air bags-- neither front nor driver's side. What are these inspections you all speak of?
& why would a car without air bags not pass inspection, since there are tons of older cars on the road without them? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Sorry if I seem stupid, but I can say I've never heard of a car inspection.
What are other things that won't pass in an inspection because I also have my door handles shaved?

With steering wheels hubs~ I would go with Momo. They will work with MOST steering wheels (Momo, Sparco, Tenzo). The Momo hub will NOT work with APC~~ I dunno what other brands they won't work with.

Any built in safety feature, be it primary, like a seatbelt, or supplemental, like an airbag (supplemental restraint system, SRS) are there for a reason. Remember, they are expensive, and automakers would love nothing more that to save money on building cars, but they are also safety conscious. I'm not sure about passing or failing inspections, but I'd leave the airbags in. Get a Wheelskins cover or something to dress up the wheel if you like, or paint the cover for a change of pace. Cars built in 1994 or older don't come with them because they weren't available back then. That said, should you decide to swap, MOMO, and Sparco hubs have 6 holes, and APC and Grant adapters have 5. I'm pretty sure that the Grant part number is 3196, the same part as for Cavaliers built prior to 1995. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There are federal laws that are passed that requires all vehicles after a certain year that come equipped with airbags to maintain them. Cars before that year need not worry about it. Basicially if your car came with it its required.
Now like you said being in Kentucky you and I neither one have to worry about that, but what you do have to worry about is insurance. Alot of insurance companies don't appreciate you tampering with your safety devices and in the event of an accident this may come back to haunt you. Some insurance companies don't mind period, some don't mind as long as you inform them.
Don't worry about you handles or nothing, living in KY has its perks, if it has four wheels proper tags, and doesn't pose a real big smog hazard you can drive whatever you want.

The biggest problem you might have would be with your insurance company. If you get in a wreck, they might not pay you as much if they find out you removed your airbags. I would ask your insurance agent first.
