manual shift knob in auto???

okay so I had this idea the other day when i was rummaging through the junkyard. I got a manual knob and boot out of a dodge avenger, and I had the idea to shorten my auto shifter, cut out the bezel and replace the boot, move my ETS switch to one of those cool little switches with the cover on them somwhere on my dash, then replace the knob with the new one. My dilemma: I don't know if there is any way that I can make a button for the shifter. I had 3 separate ideas. somehow make a button, use the actual knob as the shifter, or just say screw the button and have it constantly engaged. obviously the biggest drawback to the latter is bumping the knob and having it go into reverse or park.... bad news. I am leaning towards that, though, mostly because that would be the best, as long as i was careful. I almost always have my hand on the knob anyways (habit), so I should be okay.... feedback???

i just stuck mine on there, i have to push it down to shift. at first this was a problem because it would stay down. since last friday @ about 12:00 it started coming back up because i bent the rod at the top somehow ( by "grinding" up against it) if you know what i mean

Whats a ETS switch?

Most auto shift knobs that dont have buttons dobasically what your are describing, the whole thing slips on the shaft.

BUT... they have a thing that does clamp on to the shaft, and in turns holds a spring, and holds it one when the spring pushes it up.

Maybe you could find a spring and put on top of the black shaft, and around the yellow rod.

Pull out the console.. remove the park/brake interlock cable from the shifter assembly, and you can put any knob on there. If you don't remove that cable, you can't remove the key from the ignition.

The shifter doesn't slip in and out of gears unless you push it. I've had it on two of my cars for now 4 years... plus done it to numerous other people's cars... no one EVER put it into reverse or park by accident. I had a friend push it (with his knee) into neutral once... I'm almost convinced it was on purpose tho

BTW.. I HAVE put my car in reverse while going forward. On purpose too!! I was going 50 km/h... and the car stalled out. Ooooh.... scary! lol.

I have a Momo little manual shift knob on mine.. and the boot from a 5-speed console. Looks mint. You just get used to counting the positions, to know which gear you're in.
