Gauges with a tach
Friday, April 22, 2005 6:49 PM
I am thinking of ordering some white face gauges but almost everything I see comes with a tach. I have a 5 speed but since my car is at the garage I cannot look. However I really think that my gauges don't have a tach. Does this make sense?

My 01 base 5-speed didn't come with a tach. I bought a z24 cluster off of ebay and put an overlay in. I haven't seen any without the tach, so if you want to use one you may have to end up buying a z24 cluster.

I have seen them on ebay, I thought about ordering one because my car has no tach either. I think I am just going to buy a cluster with a tach though, I hate not having one.

i have one without tach. its looks good but i would get a new cluster with a tach. its a nice touch, preferably the sunfire's cluster. My did take some modifying to get it to work. the overlay was about a mm too wide so i had to cut out the idiot lights on my original cluster. then i took some window tint and put it over it to darken the leds up. it looked real bright before i did that. all in all it looks good.

Ok so I am not alone. Just one question, if I switch the cluster how would the tach read? I mean dosn't the wiring harness only control what's on the cluster? Or will the Z24 line up perfect and the harness as well making the tach work?

I have a 00 5 spd that came without a tach, i went to the junkyard and found a 00 ls with a tach. All i did was pulled the dash, pulled the cluster out, and slipped the new one in and plugged it in and it worked. All in all and being the first time i did that i did it all in maybe 10 mins topps. Real simple I would recommend doing it.

Would a 00-02 cluster fit in a 95-99 or should I stick to a 95-99 cluster with a tach?

i have a 96 manual with no tach, which soon i will be looking for one with a tach. Heather, your going to need to find a cluster that is between 95-98 i believe, that has a mechanical odometer so that you can switch them out, or else its auto fraud if you try to sell it. youll have to deal with the theftlock so i suggest after you switch the clusters you have a lunch ready to eat in the car, read up on the theftlock issue in the FAQ, youll see what i mean!

a 96-98 cluster WILL NOT fit a 00+!!! that's a def NOOOOOOO!!! I had to take my gauges out to put in my apc gauges. Also, the odometer is saved also, so you won't have to worry about losing your milage. The gauges themselves seem to "reset" themselves when you plug it in and it gets power to the computer. They will all set themselves to 0 so you won't have to worry about your mph, gas, etc readings being wrong. Heather, ur gunna have to find a tach -99 for it to work~

I have been looking for a 95-99 cluster. It shouldn't matter if it comes from a 2.2 or a 2.4 does it? As long as it has the manual odometer? Most of the ones I have found don't have a tach. I read the FAQs and it seems like a lot of stuff to do just to do the swap. I may not do it in fear I will break something.
