I'm currently painting the plastic dash piece on my 2003 cavalier. I bought a few cans of Krylon satin black and have been using that. I was wanting to go for a smooth fiberglassed look but its looking like crap. The surface isnt smooth enough... Any suggestions on whether to prime it and sand it down or just to sand the plastic down and spray that? I have krylon satin clear as well... donno what thats going to look like yet. Any suggestions are welcome. Ive wasted about 5 cans of satin black so far... *sigh*
Sand it to death first. Make sure it is smooth before any paint is applied. Then prep it correctly, fusion doesn't need primer and I didn't use it. Paint then snad paint then sand, and use thin coats, don't try to soak the piece. Check the FAQs, and follow the FAQs for the interior painting.
What grit would you recommend on sanding the plastic smooth? i got some 100, 150, 220, and 350 grit laying around... I can pick up a different grit, gotta buy more paint anyways.
use the 100 then use the 150, to the 220. make sure it is smooth before you paint. the paint will not smoth is out. use the 350 on the paint in between coats.
or.. you can paint it then wetsand like hell like i did and recoat it came out like glass.
Moms&Dads talk to your kids, before its too late, tell them to stay away from aluminum wings.

what kinda technique did you use to wetsand it? anything special, or just throw some water in the mix?

just wet the piece and sand it lightly
Thanks alot guys, im currently wetsanding before putting on the last coat and its so smooth
Much better than when i was screwing up before.
Ive got a helpful hint dont use that cheap rattle can crap... save your money and do it right with a real paint gun....
Eh, i dont have the time and money to use a real paint gun. Any recommendations on a finer grit for wetsanding? using 320 right now.
sanded with 3M fine paper, painted with krylon fusion, then cleared it with a couple of layers......Looks like glass
i had a few issues with krylon fusion the first time i used it. the clear didnt like it too much. i switched over to regular krylon, and have had great results since.
