lots of road noise
Sunday, May 01, 2005 8:53 PM
for some reason on the passenger side of my 1999 chevy cavalier coupe there is alot of road noise... it sounds like there is air leaking in but none can be felt. and too my knowledge the car has never been hit. so does anyone have any ways of resolving this problem thanks.

Check the weather stripping on the door and around the window mine had a problem with coming off. Make sure that all of the strips are glued down, you'd be suprised how much noise can come from them.

hey i have the same problem with my 2 door 03 base coupe cavy. whenever i go 75+ i get this almost helicopter effect from my window, i check to make sure its up all the way (it always is) and the weather stripping should be fine. ??!! whats happenin?

Also, i get a lot of dashboard vibration at 80+ it looks like the whole thing is traveling a couple of centimeters when i'm cruising down the interstate... alignment maybe?

-thanks

Its prolly your b pilar, On the outside of your door back the black piece that goes down the back. the clips will break and cause road noise. I wish i had a pic to show you

easy way to check-put the car under water, then see where the bubbles come from. you'll find your leak in no time!
but seriously, the b pillar is the part of the door to the rear of your car. it's the rear border for the door's window. normally black, unpainted plastic. i think it's the same kind of stuff that the mirrors are normally made of? could be wrong though.

When you open your door, the part of it that you usually use to close it. thats it. look at
clays car, the back side of the door, follow it all the way up to the top of the car that thick black "bar" going up the back side of the door is your b pillar.

Best bet if you dont know what your doing is to take it to the gm shop. but there are clips behind it and maybee a couple of screws. go to the junk yard and get one off of a busted ass cavi or sunfire. which ever car you have. while your taking that one off remember how you did it.

I get a kick out of this... "When my car is going 75+", lol. Obviously there is going to be a lot of wind noise or sounds when you are pushing a car that fast, lol.

As for that helicopter effect, I get that sometimes too, but only if one of my windows is down slightly. once I "close" them fully, it stops entierly.

To remove the b pillar- open door. Look at inside of door frame behind the b pillar. There is a screw there. Remove screw, pry off b pillar. If it still won't come off, check around for visible clips or more screws. Or check around to begin with. It's just a body-panel.

ok cool when i get to it ill create a guide to help fellow newbs like myself. also another question meaning i just found out that that door has been wrecked. is it possible that the weather/panel or water inside to door could have been removed or never there and that could lead to road noise. cause i just dont see how one plastic piece can create all that sound.

Add on to my last post- apparently there are a few more screws inside the frame to get that off. I haven't looked at it myself, but what I read elsewhere was to roll the window down and look in there. Sorry for the misinformation, man. One of these days I'll learn to keep my mouth shut.

I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but at least I'm a pretty color

hehe, hey we have a 75 mph tollway!
i know that the car will make a noise if one of the windows is down slightly, but this is with everything closed tightly (doors, windows). this just recently happened. maybe i should just slow down...

thanks for the feedback though

to get the b pillar piece off you have to wind your window down.... pull back the weather stripping on the bpillar part of the window... then there are only 3 screws that hold it on... no clips ot anything..... and btw... i doubt thats why he has road noise because i have had these taken off my car for the past 3 weeks and its not making the road noise bad
