Do LEDs drain the battery at all?
Tuesday, May 03, 2005 7:59 PM
Here is a list of my LED products that are all going at the same time once in a while:

64-LED Scanner in front grill
Complete LED underbody kit
Door handle LEDs (exterior)
Door LEDS (interior)
One LED in each vent (8 total)
LED bar in trunk
LED kit in front grill mesh
LEDs in all switches to the LEDs (7 total)
LED bars in engine bay
and coming soon - several more LED bars inside car

Is this eventually gonna lead to problems or am I cool? I rarely run it all at once, and even then only for an hour or so.

Is there such thing as an independent 12v source that I could use to make my LED system separate from the car's electrical system? Like maybe a small battery?

All my wires and bulbs are totally hidden, by the way. I would love to post pics but my digcam SUCKS at night.

all of that probably wouldn't draw any more than having your parking lights on

14.82 @ 97 mph

"at all" - yes
"significantly" - no

Your safe, you could prolly leave it all on overnight and your car would still start in the morning.

It's ideal to have your LEDs hooked up to a rechargable source, especially if they're wired in parallel. When your source isn't rechargable, you have to start thinking about how much power you're wasting through a resistor. This is when wiring LEDs in series comes in handy, because there is much, much less power loss. But when you're wiring LEDs into a rechargable system... it doesn't really matter how much power loss there is.

I've actually used a small 9V battery to test my undercar LEDs (that I bought used). I didn't wait to see how long that small battery would last, but I think your idea of a separate source would be easily implemented if you really needed to...

I got roughly about 50 leds on my car 24/7/365 for well over 8 mts now not 1 dead battery yet.. leds draw milliamps vs bulbs draw amps in most cases..

beer is like a chick.. well not really its just beer, it be cool thou huh?

LEDs will barely drain your battery.

Figure most LEDS draw 20-120 mA (we'll use 120 to be conservative).

From my best 20-second guestimate I'm gunna say your pushing 650 LEDS (that is also conservative.)

120 mA x 650 = 78000 mA = 78A

So you could leave all that @!#$ on and experiece LESS of a battery drain then if you left your headlights on.

neo32843: Your headlights do not draw any where near 78A. If going by what you did as an example, which I have to say the math is correct, you would drain the battery real quick if drawing 78A and the car is not running. Your headlights at 100W only draw around 8A. Remember your old school electronics 'Power = Voltage x Current (P=E*I)'

^^ Point well taken. I must not have been thinking. Either way all my math is a conservative estimate. None the less, he knows what Im talking about better then I do.

Your right. Unless he has a ton of LEDs, he shouldn't have any problems.
