Heres a couple pics after pulling the fabric across and getting it stapled, then applying the resin with hardner. We had the fabric pulled pretty damn tight and it was completely smooth but when we applied the resin the fabric got VERY limp and made tons of wrinkles. Talk about making me mad. Guess I will have alot of sanding/filling to do.

Im not trying to be a d*ck, but you should have pulled the material tighter otherwise your gonna have to fill alot to get rid of the wrinkles.

Didn't I say that we had it pulled pretty damn tight? If I had pulled it any tighter it would have broken the baffles away from the rings again. I used a fleece/polyester material. It stretches real nice and doesnt soak up too much resin. It shrunk up a good bit this morning but there are still some wrinkles. I will be putting a few layers of glass on today so I will have pics later tonight.

use some thicker dowel rods and fiberglass the rings to the dowels, that way you can pulle the fleece allot tighter without worrying about breaking the frame. and if it was tight, change the material your using.

off to a good start man.

but the inside of your place must smell like glass like Crazy...

I never thought of that sndsgood. Fiberglass would definitely hold it better than wood glue. I got the first coat of fiberglass on today and heres how it looks so far:

The fiberglass was pretty forgiving of the wrinkles and actually smoothed it out alot. I think after another 1-2 coats of fiber glass, this box may actually turn out decent with enough sanding/body filler. More pics to come soon.

And yes, even tho I had all the windows open and both ceiling fans on, the place smelled terrible. I think I got my ferrets high I will never do that again even if it is raining outside.

Yeah I measured it and its 35x11 and 16" tall. Which is just about perfect : ) #rd coat of glass is drying as we speak. I will add more pictures once I start sanding it.

bit too late for this advice..but oh well.

when mounting your rings...it's a LOT easier and stronger to make them a solid piece, and cut the hole for the sub after your done. to mount them, you just take a 2x4 and a screw in the bottom of the box, and screw in the middle of the ring. then you can easily take it out afterwards.

oh yea, and buy a router

Yeah I was thinking about that but it is a little late Oh well. The 3 layers are dry now and man, I ddin't realise how strong fiberglass is. I had my wife standing on it and it didnt even flex! Kinda makes me wonder how hard sanding it is going to be. Im gonna let it dry over night and get to sanding tomorrow. So far between wood and fiberglass, brushes etc its only costed me 67$. That of course doesnt include the price of buying a drill, sander, and hot glue gun because well, those are needed anyways I think I messed up by putting newspaper on the bottom because now the nespaper is in a way "welded" to the box. Im going to have to take my dremel and cut the entire base off because that newspaper isnt going anywhere.

I prefer speaker box carpet, it soaks up the resin nice and you dont really have to do multiple layers.

How would you go about stretching carpet over the rings? Am I missing something or would it not stretch at all?

its looking better but going to take allot to get it smoothed out. i'd suggest throwing some filler on the wrinkled ares to get it smoother, then add a few more layers of fiberglass.

Sanding it as we speak. Lots of damn wrinkles on this thing. Man theres alot of high and low spots. Im going to have to pray to the body filler gods for this one I know from doing body work on cars that the less filler you use the better, but I just don't see that happening here. I have read a few articles on the net and it seems most people say body filler is the saving grace of fiberglassing. Once I get the whole thing sanded I will add filler and hope for the best. Pics coming when Im done sanding

Well I got the initial sanding done and started to put filler on it, when it decided to start to rain. Figures right? SO heres some pictures of the first snading and some body filler. Plus I dremeled out one hole to fit the sub and it looks like its gonne fit fine. Tell me what you guys think.

another tip for ya. if u do another box, go ahead and cut the hole for the sub after u soak the resin piece, should be thin enough that you can run an x acto knife right around wood trim piece and cut a perfect circle quickly.

get some more filler on there and sand it smooth and youlle be ready to roll.

I got more filler on and did about 2 hours worth of sanding today. I didnt get a chance to take pics but I will tomorrow.

you don't have to sand it before you start putting filler on it...just smear it with the filler and sand from there..screw sanding the material itself...too hard! lol
