Door Panels without Vinyl & whats under vinyl dash

OK, so I've heard that some specific cavalier models or years have door panels without vinyl, they are all plastic. Is this true? If so what years or models have these? (The reason I ask is because I'm going to be sanding and painting these with automotive paint soon, and all plastic would make it much easier)

Also, I was wondering what is under the vinyl on the upper dash peice? Is it cheap partical board or almost a cardboard material like the rear deck has under the carpet? Thanks in advance!

I could and prob. should say search just like everyone else says, BUT I to ask stupid questions befor I search sometimes, so Ill help u out.

Yes it is true that some cavaliers have plastic door panels. The models are 2000+ . All the older styles are vinyl.

The dash is Plastic under the vinyl not card board. If your thinking about taking the vinyl off and sanding it, stop it will be to thin, you will have to fiberglass it.

not true, my 98 z has all plastic panels. And if you remove the vynal and sand that down, the only problem you will have is there will be a 1/4 inch gap in between the piece by the windshield and the dash top. There was a post a while back where someone showed how to paint the vynal dash top with automotive paint without stripping the vynal and no fiberglass.

You must have been lucky then. I've never seen a one peice plastic door panel in anything but the 2K and up. Its what I ended up swapping into my car when I did my doors.

It could be a z24 thing, my 95 base had the vynal on the top, and this one (98 z24) doesnt so i dont know.

smoothcavi: he's talking about the upper section of the door panel. Some came covered in vynal, some came in plastic.

sndsgood: Its good to have all plastic if you just want to sand them and paint them, that way no fiberglassing is involved.

oh, i misread it, i thought you were talking about just the people on the org when you said majority. that is pretty weird when you think about it.
