hey, i wanted to vinal just the top part of my door panels, and the guy at the upholstry shop said all he would have to do is just lay the blue vinal over the old vinal taht is on it, cuz he said its more of a waste of time to take the old stuff off, and it would look the same, i was wondering if those door panels separate, like the hard plastic on the bottom and the vinaled part on top, do they come apart?
yeah they come apart... They are plastic welded on the back. I would tell him to take the old vynal off and do it right. If he goes over the new vynal, everything may not fit like it should, and it might start lifting up after sitting out in the heat.
how do you get them back together if u break the plastic welds to take them apart
Ive heard of people using epoxy, i took a set apart before, but i trashed them before i had to put them back together.
u can use epoxy, but the best way imo is to just reheat the plastic welds and melt it back together, but be careful you dont get it so hot you warp the panel. i did that once but my excuse was i had worked all day and then worked till about 3 am trying to get my buddies car ready for the bash. sleep deprivation causes errors
as for wether to put it over top of the other, it all depends on the upolsterer. a good upolsterer could do it without any issues. that vinyl on the doors now is pretty much as form fitting as you can get so leaving it on really shouldnt be an issue. and if the guy has any smarts at all he has the right glue that wont give way under daily heat. if he doesnt know that he wouldnt be in business long.

well, i took the panels off my old cav today, and tonight i took a power chisel and popped them all off...did a beautiful job. The upholsterer is respected, they have been in business for a long time. He told me that the gluing ontop of the old vinal wouldnt be a problem, he says that he does that a lot...so....he should know what hes doing. i dont really understand about the re-heating process, cuz after they popped off....there is like no plastic left
does this also work for the sunfire? cause i had taken my door panels off to redo them and it looked just like one solid panel on the back except for a few places and i didnt want to try anything cause i didnt want to make matters worse. need advice and tips please.
