how do you remove the shifter on an automatic?

I have an '02 cavalier, and i want to paint the centre console, and i dont know how to take off the shift knob. how do you do it? if anyone has any pictures that would help let me know. thanks.

There is a small C clip on the back side that needs to be taken out. Use a small screwdrive to catch the top of the clip them pull it out. Knob slides right up.

Alright thanks. but how do i get the console out? the e-brake seems to be in the way.

I belive I seen it in another post.. it said to lift the e-brake up all the way... then take off the console...

Its also in the FAQ thread. Remove the C or U clip w/e you want to call it with a flat head screw driver and the knob will pop off. Then put your new one on.
