Tuesday, June 07, 2005 8:14 PM
Ok guys tommorrow I am laying my last coat of epoxy resin before I wetsand and add clear to my piece, what I was wondering was to get things perfectly smooth before clearing what grit did you guys start wetsanding with and then work your way up too?
Thanks.

really it just kind of varies on how smooth the project is, i try to use the finest grit i can without it being to fine that it takes forever, ive had projects where i would start with 60 grit, ive had projects that i start with 120 or 150 grit. just really depends on how well a job you did laying on the resin really.

^ But with CF, you don't want to sand through the resin, so I would start quite a bit higher, around 500-600 in a hidden area.

I would say Shifted is right. Also with your last layer it should be a flood coat to even anything out. Most of my parts never really have needed to be sanded, but just cleared.

My part I am doing has dried pretty level, but I like things to be as even as possible before I clear it. Thanks for the info guys I was looking at starting around 600 and its laid on pretty thick so I have room to work with.

your 1st coat should be pretty thin, just to soak up into the c/f. then you should be using 1-2 flood coats.

When I sanded mine I started sanding with 400 gritt and worked my way up to 1500 wet sand. Then I used some clear.

But like TRD cav fire said, depending how well your flood coats levels out, minimal or no sanding will be required.

^^thats basically it. however i have had some projects that were so uneven that flood coats wouldnt level it out, so i took a sander and 60 grit to it. then i worked my way up from there. if your piece is pretty smooth, then 400-600 is where i would start. good luck and post pics when its done

Thanks guys, I'm going to probably start wetsanding tommorrow I didn't lay my flood coat on too thick but I felt it wasn't really needed needed, I only have a few high spots that need sanded down from where the resin dripped over the sides, so I'll probably start with 400 and work my way up from there and then use 600 on the rest of the piece.
