Interior paint removal?
Saturday, June 11, 2005 12:53 AM
Ok guys I need your help. I have two questions. First I ATTEMPTED to paint my interior white with green trim. It has since been screwed up and gotten dirty. What should I use to remove it. I have heard normal thinner will eat the vinyl and plastics.

Second I have or half have the tan interior. How hard would it be to make it all black with dark green trim. Once it is removed I am having someone else help me versus screwing it up again by myself. Also should I had removed the vinyl and padding from the dash and door handle prior to painting or is that if I was just glassing it. I would like to eventually glass it all but thats later when I got the cash.

Thanks

What you did wrong was not use automotive paint and clear. Over time the spray paint kind will imbed dirt in it and make it impossible to clean out. Yes it looks good at first but over time is not very helpful. The very first time I did my interior thats what I used and quicly switched over to Dupont Chroma Premier sprayed through an HVLP gun.

As far as removing if you are looking to do it right and want it pretty much stripped start around 180 or 220 and then start wetsanding your way up with 220 up to 320. You have to watch what you put on plastic. Alot of paint strippers out there will melt plastic in a hurry. One thing you could try is Basemaker used on automotive paints. I used this on a couple plastic pieces allowing it to soak and it pretty much brough the paint up without harming the plastic. I only left it submerged in it for about five minutes though.

I hear every one has used Krylon Fusion with no problems and that is what I used. Granted I used some cheap clear coat. I have some acetone, and will see how it works on a hidden area and go from there. Thanks guys.
