I have sanded and painted and cleared the entire inside of my 01 Cavalier. My buddy mentioned that using a filler/putty would be a good way to fill in the whole where the cigarate lighter goes. (I don'te smoke and wanted to put a switch in there) Everything was done, it looked awesome...but....wait.....here comes the damn heat of the summer. The spot around the switch where all the filler went in is cracking. It's not cracking through the paint but give it time. I figure that would happen but was hoping for the best. I have to do it all over again now and was hoping someone might have a better idea. I've never used fiberglass and i don't really have the best place to do it (appartment). Is there anyway to keep the filler from cracking. I put like ten layer's of high build primer and it still cracked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
You can use urethane putty, it won't crack.
but it wont necessairly stick, and could crack away. I have used some of that and had mixed results.
Best bet would be to glass over the area you want flat drilling through to get it to stick.
Body puddy wasnt meant to fill huge holes, just smaller divots left from glassing and such.

I guess I wasn't in-depth enough with my thoughts...
Use a small plastic filler piece, cut it off a frisbee or something
And use the urethane putty or liquid urethane to hold it in place and as a molding filler look also.
sorry but i get a kick when people try to fill in holes w/ filler. it always cracks.
WOW!!! Sounds like I succesfully made an ass of myself. Oh well, I guess I'll try fiberglassing it. Seems to be the most logical way to do it. When you say to drill so it sticks, you mean through the actual dash and fiberglass a little of the back so it holds against the plastic right?
If there is anything this site is good about, it is the fact that they will support everyone, even if you screw it up the first ten times, they just tell you to try something else or give you advice on what to do differently. Gotta love the .ORG.....Jay

Id like to see how you "weld in some plastic".

well 1. there are plastic welders. if u take off ur door panel, the carpeted part is held on with plastic welds...and 2. as long as u can melt the plastic, ur pretty much welding it...it will dry and stick to whatever its touching when still soft
