Hey for those who have aftermarket steering wheels, did you have any troubles passing safety?
*Apparently* the wheel has to be of a certain diameter to meet the safety regulations. Some of these aftermarket wheels are too small, but make you turn pretty quick. Another thing is the factory steering wheel *suppose* to bend if you whack it, as a safety percaution. The aftermarket ones do not.
...but they look so cool

not to jack your post but i had this question also, what about the air bag dont you need that?
i was told by guy at inspection station that if you remove oe safety equipment aka airbag in sterring wheel you wont pass but he also said that a lot of stations dont care
Airbags are standard in all cars now, so if you remove them, your car is considered "unsafe" and won't pass a safety inspection. Mainly they look for the driver airbag.
They are pretty much right. If you feel that you must have an aftermarket wheel, then your best bet is to get your car through inspection, and then install it. I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for an aftermarket wheel, and I can tell you, I have been pulled over a few times where I have gotten other repair orders.
Also, keep in mind.. if you remove your airbag, don't let your insurance company find out.. just makes you more at risk to them.. they might jack your policy costs up slightly (not positive, just would make sense).
where can i get hubs for a new after market wheel
airbags depend on state, ive read through pa inspection codes and have found nothing pertaining to airbags

after many many posts... im gonna consider myself an expert on this topic:
for the inspections, it all varies state to state. Insurance companies will almost always raise your premium if you don't have airbags. In some states, it is illegal to remove airbags; however, some inspection places dont care.
when considering safety, however, you MUST realize that an aftermarket steering wheel without airbags is a definite hazard. the hubs are designed to crush on impact, but not to the point that it could save your life to the extent that an airbag could in a high-speed crash. by removing airbags, your chances of death in high-speed collisions are without a doubt increased.
however, you CAN be safe with an aftermarket racing wheel. With 4-or-more point harnesses (mounted properly) and a roll bar/cage, you're safer (in my opinion) than you were with the airbag.
