I have spent HOURS and HOURS sanding, and am still not done, even with an electric sander. It could turn into a much longer process than you expect if you are going to do it properly. I sand 60, 120, 220, wetsand 400, adhesive promotor, prime, wetsand 400, adhesive promotor, paint a few light coats, adhesive promotor, clear, then do like a 2k sand/buffing

That should work best for plastic parts, but spraying from a can is not nearly as good from a gun imo.

yea, i have had my door panels off for 2 months sanding and trying to get the stupid clear coat to look right. lol, BIG WORD OF ADVICE, get an electric sander, black and decker makes one called the mouse, you can get it a wally world for pretty cheap.

this isnt too aweful hard is it? also i went to the junk yard and found one cavy 2 door one door had been ripped off and they wanted 25 bucks just for the interior door panel. i thought that was kinda rediculous, or am i wrong?

When I did mine I cleaned it with a special cleaner you can pick up at paint stores (sorry can't remember the name). Then I scuffed it with 180 grit and wetsanded with 220 grit. I used an adhesive promoter then used a urethane primer in an HVLP spray gun. (all Dupont Chroma Premier products btw.)
I did about 3-4 medium coats until everything was filled in nicely, then wetsanded with 600 grit and then sealed it before I went into the base/clear process. Then like was mentioned 2k wetsand and buff and you get a great glossy product.
Sorry for the quick guide.
No need in sanding it as smooth as possible when the urethane primer fills in those areas you scuff down. But if you go the spray can route you have alot of sanding ahead of you unfortunately.
I ened up opting for 2k door panels to get the plastic tops though so I could paint it.

Such over dramatics...

I used 60, 120, 220. Primer. Sanded primer with 320. Painted, sanded with 320. Painted, sanded with 320. Clear coat. Sand with 320. Clear coat, voila, awesome.

i did pretty much the same thing as 03 cf blues except i didnt use any adhesion promoter. biggest thing is to just sand all the texture off, even something that doesnt seem like its a big deal will show up allot more once its painted if u are using a high build primer for a hvlp gun then u can do the laying up the primer and sanding it smooth. but if your spray bombing it i'd sand all the texture off. all of it, every nook and cranny. and i know u dont have a hvlp gun. but i'd suggest having a body shop spray it. will turn out 10x better then the spray can. and can be done for 1-200$

I did it all by hand, you can get in a lot of grooves that the electric sanders can get to. Also, if you drop it, have it slip, etc, you risk it cracking the bezel or whatnot. Its not that big of an area, so a power sander is a little pointless.

but a electric is faster in the places it can get too. john post a pic of your interior please.

ive seen some of their rods where the metal dash matches the car. so technically yes i have.

but in all honesty, were driving cavaliers here, not 50,000 hot rods. they are two diffrent styles. thats like saying you dont see football players practicing their batting. of course u dont, they are doing two diffrent things. hot rods and sport compacts are diffrent cars with diffrent styles. it seems your on the wrong site, maybe u should hang out at a site that is into the same thing as you, instead of poking fun at people with diffrent styles then you.
