I have a 98 cavy with no tach, now do all the clusters have a slot for a tach. Becuz i'm going to swap over to one that has a take from a 96-98, just making sure it will work

Yes, but you have to let the car die when you put the transplanted cluster in...because it won't start..

Copied from another post:

"Seriously, this is the way to get around it, the theftlock must be reprogrammed, and this is how:
1. Start the car and let it die. The theftlock light will be on, DO NOT TURN THE KEY OFF, OR OPEN ANY DOORS, OR TURN ON ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. Just fold your hands under your arms and wait 10-15 minutes...
2. After the car stalls, the theftlock light will blink. wait until it stops blinking.
3. Wait 1 minute after it stops blinking.
4. Turn the key to off, wait 10 seconds, then start the car again.
You may have to do this 3 times for it to work correctly."

I just did this 5 minutes ago, and it works!!

how much should it cost approx to get a used instrument cluster from a junk yard? Cuz my local scrap yard said it would be $230 canadian for one, is that normal or am I being ripped off? Also is it true that with my 1995 cavalier instrument cluster I can jsut swap out my odometre assembly and put it on the new cluster or no, will I have to send in the new cluster to the government to get it reset to what my reading is? Thanx

i bought my cluster on ebay for $30. i think that junkyard price is steep. since you have a 95, the odometer is analog, ie has tumblers. all you have to do is swap the milage tumblers from your cluster into the new one. its a very easy process.

$230?!? For a ten year old USED part? Tell them to shove it up their ass!!! That's unreal.

Maybe if it was brand new, you'd have to pay that much. I paid $20 for an almost new 2004 cluster... that was from a wrecker in Vancouver, BC.. of course, I know them well.. and they don't try and rip me off... but also there's at least two dozen 2000+ cars in their yard... sure, the 95-97'ish cars are harder to find in good shape in the yards now, but they're not collector cars or anything...

$230.... geezus...

But it was the theftlock light that blinks, and that you want to stop blinking as an indicator of when you can try to start your car up.

No... you want the security light (aka Passlock) on the DASH to stop blinking.

Theftlock is a radio feature, and has nothing to do with the car starting.

2002 is plug and play... as are all 2000+ clusters. No need to reprogram the Passlock. You can put any cluster in too... tach, no tach, Cavalier, Sunfire, Canadian, US, Japan... no difference.

so, let me get all this straight (I will be helping him with the swap and will have my dad--an electrical engineer-- on standby.

His car does not have a tach now, if we put the new cluster with a tach in, it will work? Is the wiring for the tach already in the car?

I know there is some splicing involved, I just want to make sure the wiring for the tach is already in the car.

thanks
