Funny thing this is.....me and my buddy just took the dash out of his malibu and we had the same problem. We checked the dash and all of the connections. His dash lights were out and his radio was shot there was smoke coming out of it. To find out when putting it back a white wire that goes to the dash was wired back to the radio by mistake and fried his radio.
Well after fixing all of this and getting a new deck we tried to start the car and like yours it starts and instantly dies.....Well we @!#$ our pants because we thought we damaged something electrically. Turns out the battery needed charging and all was well. No problems since. Thought I would share the whole thing and maybe it would help trouble shoot yours?
is everything plugged back in?
My car sorta did this when I took out the dash and bezel and what not. I went to turn on the headlights for a second, and they flashes, and died right away and didn't come back on. So when I reassembled everything and connected wires, etc, I started the car, turned on the lights, etc and everything was fine. Maybe its just a think for Chevy wiring that everything has to be connected to work.
I know my 99 would do the same thing until I plugged the cluster back in and then all was good. It's the theft lock.
its either the theft lock or a plug. i dont know what the plug is but i know when i did my gauges, we forgot to plug something in for the dash (it clipped in, it wasnt anything on the cluster) but i couldnt start the car and remembered i forgot to re-connect that plug
Ok i figured it out i forgot to put that little black plug that goes from teh starter to the cluster back in. thanks guys!
