Manual Shift knob removal

Ok, I have an 04 sunfire and I can't get the freaking knob off. Also my car has the stupid guard you have tu pull up before putting it in reverse. I assume by looking at it, there is no problem to remove this. But how the heck do you pop that thing off??? Help!

The lock out is there for a reason. Do yourself a huge favor and dont remove it just cause its a pain. A new tranny is too expensive to justify trying to remove the lockout.
On my 04 cav I just twisted and pulled real hard and pop off it came. But I'm not sure you can put it back on. I replaced my shifter with the B&M one thats why I took mine off.

the knob pulls off, its real hard to get it, but it pulls off, try twisting while pulling, and for the lockout, just unsnap the boot and pull the lockout off. i don't think its real important unless you see yoruself putting the car into reverse while moving, but then again, its not that hard to deal with the lockout either, and it makes the shifter look cleaner with it i think

Yeah, I am at work but will yank on the stupid thing tonight. As far as the lockout it seems that it shouldn't affect anything in the tranny or clutch, as long as you know how to drive a manual. I don't think I will forget I only have 5 gears...but if I try to throw it into 6th, that could be ugly.

I understand you know how to drive a 5spd. But mistakes can happen and that would be an expensive mistake. I'm only saying this cause I don't want to see you blow your tranny or clutch. But if your that determined to do it then good luck.

Forget about the warranty of your tranny if you get rid of the lockout... You won't be able to say to the dealer : But I was thinking that I've got it back in 4th.... but that's your car, not mine. And BTW, I'm not saying that you're stupid or something, but as jackalope said, mistakes happen.

As long as the synchronizer is in good shape, you shouldn't have a problem with it dropping into reverse.

^^ Exactly. If you're even slowly moving forward, you can't even move the shift knob into reverse... with or without the plastic lockout sleeve thing.

I've tried... and even with the clutch fully depressed, I can't get it in reverse unless my car isn't rolling forward... the car has to stop first.

Cool if you guys say there is NO WAY for him to lose his tranny or clutch. What the hell
go for it . I just always like to be cautious thats all, I wouldn't want to tell him to do something that could kill his car. Not that either of you would I know.

Good luck Gabe.
