ok you can see in this pic that i haven't painted the strip by the winshield and the lower half of the dash (glove box, understeering wheel)

How do you paint these/take em out to paint.

Thanks all!

I obviously had my dash and everything else taken apart. We had the stereo out and climate control and the airbag off... then attempted the steering wheel... can you get out the bottom half of your dash or do you just paint it in the car. And how do you get that top piece off cause it looked like it was part of the lower dash

To get that piece out I am pretty sure you need to take out the entire dash. EVERYTHING! Down to the firewall pretty much.

The big noticeable crack thats been there since i got it is right in front of the defroster vent...I had a friend with a 2000 sedan and his dad had a 2001 sedan, both cracked..i have a small crack in mine in front of the air bag cover on the dash....yet my mom's 96 cavi coupe has almost 165K miles and no cracks

one of the J-Body Companies on here sells a fiberglass piece that goes over it. I wanna say it's Winks but i'm not sure. It's one alternative to having to take your WHOLE dash apart.

Those 2 parts that you have not painted yet are the same piece- as you mentioned above.

When they say the whole dash, they mean everything- airbags, steering wheel, Hvac ducts etc etc...

-unplug the negative side of your battery

-pull the airbag fuse out

-take off your dash pad

- take off your bezel

-take our your stereo

-take out the HVAC

-take out the instrument cluster

-take off the steering wheel ( driver side airbag will come with it)

-take out the passenger side airbag

-remove A/C / Heater ducting

after that you should have a huge piece left which covers the lower dash and the piece by the windshield... unbolt every gold bolt holding it on and pull it out...

have fun..... i have done this 3 times already....and i will not do it again as i have my sunfire interior in my cav now

sounds like you were pretty close there, if you had pulled the steering wheel off. popped off the plastic vent ducting and then just followed along the edge of the dash removing the screws you could have popped it right out.

u can get a steering wheel puller for around 15$ and i personally would suggest removing the piece from the car. ive seen way to many cars with paint overspray on pieces from people who decided not to remove it.

the crack is normal. it's due to sunlight and flexing. my 99 has two cracks (there when i bought it) but my ex-g/f's mom's 96 cavi doesn't have a crack. it's just luck of the draw i guess.
