hey has any body done a full cluster change with nothing but autometer gauges. i guess the question is i want to do something like that but i need to know if it is possible. my plans are to get the autometer cobalt series gauges and i know that a tach is easily installed but what about a speedometer? is that easily installed as well. what about the numbers that count your miles and your trip miles can you change those too. by the way this is on a 98 sunfire gt standard trans. but does anyone have any input on this, suggestions or is this just impossible. and yes i do plan to get a new cluster made out of fiberglass so all the gauges fit properly. but please if you have any input let me know. i did search by the way but i didnt find anything on them. so let me know. thanx in advance. HEY NO ONE TAKE MY IDEA! not really just kidding. im sure its been thought before!!!!!! haha
I'm doing it this winter if all goes to plan. Aluminum or body color steel plate and routing all the wires to the senders. You have to watch, IIRC after a certain year you need the cluster to be hooked up for the car to run. or so I was told in my post a long time ago.
I'm going with Ultralite Gages. a 3 3/8" 160 speedometer (yes, I can go that fast
), a 3 3/8" 10,000rpm tach (yes, I can use most of it
), 2 1/16" fuel level, water temp, oil pressure, and volt meter all in the cluster. I also plan on the boost gage , fuel pressure, and EGT in the near future. I'll try to retain some sort of warning lights as well if I can get the LED's to fit and work with the factory computer.
^^^^^^^^^ so then u are able to hook up the speedometer right. and you said that after a certain year you need the cluster to be on so the car can run you dont happen to know the year. mine is a 98. and i guess the next question is, is it going to be that much of a pain in the ass to do it?
what about the ododmeter?
wait for it... wait for it... NOW GO!! ---> '02 LS Sport <---

Im pretty sure the cobalt speedometer has a digital
odometer. How it works i dunno. Youre right someone
has already thought of doing this.....I have been planning
on doing it since the cobalts came out, but I have too
many other things to work on first so you can beat me to it!
the autometer electronic speedo can be programmed for just about any tire size and vss. just tap into the vss and drive 2 miles and its programmed (the closer to an EXACT 2 mile the more precise the speedometer will be). that means you could have like 13 inch rims and slap on 24 inch rims, drive a marked out 2 miles, and the speedo would be calibrated.
as far as odometer, IF you sell the car, you just have to note on the title that the odometer was changed and actual mileage is higher (write it down when you change the speedometer)
so its just that easy where you just tap into the vss? is it that simple. what about the temp gauge and fuel gauge are those easy too. how do you do those?
Summitracing.com has the instructions on how to do the hookup. some just tie into the original sender. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it myself. summit says the the GM sender will work for GM cars up to 97 IIRC. temp gage should be almost as easy if you go electronic, maybe finding an open threadhole (plugged right now of course) or adding a small "T" somewhere to add the sender on at most I would think.
