I am thinking about fiberglassing my entire interior and I want to do my dash too. The only question I have right now is, if the air bags were to deploy on the passange side, will it bust thru the fiberglass and still work or what???

YEa it will go threw depending on how thick the glass is...but from what i'm thinking is that the glass could possibly fly up and hurt the passenger. What i would do is check your state inspection laws and if u can just remove the air bag then that's what i would do. Good luck man hope my 2cents helps a little bit
either remove your air bag or don't glass over the air bag cover....unless you want your passenger to be picking long pieces of fiberglass out of their eyes

See and I don't want to take the airbags out of my car because it is a daily driver and I still want it there for the safety. Do you think, if i could pull it off, that I could paint just that piece with a filler primer (or something similar) and paint over it like this dude did -

The only problem with this being that I would be painting vinyl with paint and it would most likely chip. Does anyone know of a way to get it smooth like fiberglass without fiberglassing it or having the chance to chip and peel.

DO no glass the air bag cover...if that thing ever does go off, the passenger will be cut up like mad....I suggest doing many coats of primer, sanding between each coat to get a smooth flat surface, paint it, wet sand the paint between coats, and give it a few shots of clear...It will be smooth, flush and have the fiberglassed look.
yeah the airbag would definitely blow right through the fiberglass.

said your passenger is gonna take all that fiberglass to the head....
and the airbags alone will burn the hell out of you.
i would actually question wether the passenger would get hit with fiberglass. the panel blows back towards the window and the airbag would likely block any fiberglass debri. but im not willing to try it myself. the airbag cover itself should be plastic and not vinyl so you can use a high build primer on it and paint it and it should look just like the rest. and if you do it right it shouldnt chip off at all. half the interior in my car is painted that way and ive never had a chip.

the "fiber" wouldn't break cleanly (I guess you could partialy cut behind it to ensure it would break where the bag is) so there would be a good chance of at least some of the fibergass would be between the passenger and the bag.

This guy only used the fleece mat and hardener and not the fiberglass to make a guage panel. The airbags could still work and i don't see any extra danger to the passenger.
i think someone really should do an actual test on this matter.....

A side note... I was in an accident at 30mph. Neither air bag even touched me or my passenger... seat belts worked as they are supposed to. I honestly don't understand the purpose of an air bag anymore except if my seatbelt malfunctions. The passenger air bag smacks the windsheild when it deploys and fragments of glass flew all over my passenger and I. (luckily not in our eyes)
The glass fragments were scary enough. I wouldn't cover the air bag cover with anything that could flake off or break apart and turn to shrapnel in a crash.
funny thing is i was thinking about the same thing today (the dash and painting) iv'e worked with fibreglass 4 a long time (hand laid and chopgun with resin spray?) and what i'm thinking is dynoglass (a very thin layier) just a little to take out low spots that way if the bag pops the damage to anyone is min, leave the line around the bag open just prime it smooth i'll give it a try next weekend and let ya know ...

the whole airbag cover folds and even the dash rips apart and it will bend the iron holder too. glassin it would injure everybody if you keep that airbag in/activated. just use high build primer and sand if nessesary then paint if you want a working airbag

You will also PROBABLY be buying a new windshield if that bag goes off also, at least in my experience. There is some of my worthless info...
I forgot that the cover for the airbag is plastic and not as "vinylie" squishy as the rest of the dash (if that made sense). I think im prolly going to filler prime that piece and paint it. And still have it so the bag will blow and not have to go thru anything.

yeah that airbag cover will hit the windshield thats why theres a bend in the lid. the airbags are violent and dangerous they would probly cause deaths or serious injury if hit by one. i tried to bend the steel holder strait but it wont move. maybe it would be alot safer to have a 4 point harness than those airbags.. they should at least turn down the pressure.
and dont bother trying to sand down the cover first.. its made of a rubbery plastic that would just ball up
