Protecting painted interiors

Hey guys I'm working on my interior and I am just wondering how you guys protect the larger interior pieces from dust and such while painting it? Also how do you keep the bottom of it from sticking to a surface? Do you hang every piece?

I've only done my centre console.. but yeah, I hung the pieces as I sprayed them. I did it out side on a very calm day (re: not windy) and I had no problems with dust.

i work at a shop thats dust all the time i just started on my dash its too cold to paint outside i live in a apt, so i'm using the hallway walkin closet spraying only a little bit at a time with the one window open cause the fumes are killer i never hung my dash up i used a drop cloth and moved the part gently over each time so there was no bulid up of paint at the bottom and riping it off the cloth and he part but yeah the right way is to hang it up

Whn i painted my dash i had a floor vac near by, But if you are pinting outside, do it early morning, little wind, and air seems to be cleaner.

What did you guys use to get the texture out of the plasic? I just got done doing the glove box. It looks good but i still have some texture to it. I sanded it with 100 then 120 washed it off and went with some 220. I did it all by hand and it took me an hour to get it that far. Thinking about getting that Black and Decker Mouse sander and trying again.

well i took off the centre con, then grabbed some black waterproof (gatorgrit 120 grit) 3m sandpaper works better and is more$$$ Just make sure your using automotive sandpaper. Cause sandpaper for wood is diffrent i find and it wears out quicker i then when with a 180 grit to take out any undull spots and deep scratch mark left from the 120grit remember not to sand fast or hard . sand fast will heat up the plastic and turn it into glue and gum up the paper and mess up what your doing. and with doing the centre con, you need to take out the vents push the vent down all the way and wiggle it towards you and back and forth theres tabs on each side and it will pop out then take the flaps out of the vent each flap has a tab on top and bottom on a small plastic bar that control the movement of the flaps go slowly on the flap cause the bar will break. I broke one already . now that all is sanded and cleaned i used a scatch filler & primer. you can get it at any auto parts store. some peeps might say find a primer for plastic it helps the paint to stick but i'm having no problems with mine after the primer coats (2) for me i then let it dry and used 320 grit wet sanding till everything looked flat and smooth if yours doesn't sand the area some more if it has high spots then reapply the primer there. then i cleaned it again and painted it with three light coats of blue (this: part ya might not have to do! ::: i then used 2,000 grit wet sand lightly and super smoothed the paint. hard would of dulled the mets in the paint) i then used 3 coats of clear coat and even with the paint dryed it look wet and bright as hell there was no way to use a palm sander in the dash and again it might be too fast
