Switching to a racing wheel
Tuesday, December 13, 2005 11:23 PM
Hey guys quick ?, I want to swap my stock steering wheel for a Sparco or MOMO racing wheel for weight savings, looks, and a generally better feel but if I do so will it keep my car from passing PA state inspection, I need some of you PA techs out there to chime in on this cuz I have no idea what the exact laws are.

Call an inspection place and speak, clearly, into the phone:

"Will a car originally equipped with passenger and drivers airbags pass inspection with an aftermarket steering wheel and no airbags?"

That will answer all your questions... (And it will probably be No, it won't)

Ive heard it will pass as long as the wheel diameter is the same as the stock one.

probably not because you have to remove the airbag

What about the 5,000 mile exempt rule ( exempt from emissions testing and most inspection laws if you drive the vehicle less than 5,000 miles per year? Do you think I would pass with the race wheel even if I drive the car under 5k ?
Thanks for your help guys it is appreciated

I don't get how you say one of the reasons is for weight... A stock wheel isn't exactly like 40lbs ya know... It'd only end up saving you maybe 5-10lbs at most. Not really worth it, specially for all the troule of changing a wheel.

ive checked PA inspection codes over and over, and airbags arent mentioned at all in there, so i think its ok to remove bags, and for the size thing, its becuase they dont' want people to put on those little tiny chain steering wheels that take longer to turn the wheels...or something like that

No, there are different connections for each airbag. The major issue with removing the driver side airbag is your safety. In the event you get nailed, you won't hit a bag, rather, you'll slam right into a steering wheel with 0 protection.

not true. if you remove one, you lose both. they are on the same circuit, kinda like christmas lights, you lose one, you lose em all

I am planning on upgrading to a roll bar, racing seats, and 4 or 5 points, so airbags matter not to me

I dont understand why airbags would cause you to fail an inspection because if you have an older vehicle, that doesnt have bags, than that is saying it wont pass

you do know things change over time right? just like the new law they passed in pa about any car 96 or up is being plugged into the computer now to avoid people running other cars

Are you sure their on the same circuit? I do know they have different connections and plugs entierly, but why would you lose both? Even if their on the same circuit, just unplugging one would kill the connection for that one and not the passenger. Then again, I don't know all that much about air bag systems.

Nate, that law about the older cars passing without them is because of the year that airbags were made standard. I believe it was 95 that they were made standard, I could be wrong. So anything under 95 that doesn't have them is good to go. Then again, most cars before 95 were actually made of GOOD material and just not plastic and duct tape, LOL.

if your airbag light on the dash is on, the airbag system is disabled. even if both bags are installed, if the light is on the bags are off...at least thats how toyotas are

I have passed inspection without airbags in a car. The airbags were deployed and I never changed them. They didn't care and told me it passed,

im still confused though will changing your steering will cause your passenger bag to be disabled.
