PS2 in car question...
Saturday, December 24, 2005 11:46 AM
well im getting a flip out dvd player. so i figured it would be nice to have a ps2 in the car. im want the old style because it has a switch that turns it of (slims dont). the slims have a red light on and that will just drain my battery. i also think it would be better in my glove box because the drive goes in and out. now which consol skips lett/not at all. because i dont want it to freeze while im driving. is there any ways to make it not skip? thanks in advance.

im sorry but if that tiny ass little LED drains your battery, then you have the worst friggin battery ever made

You're going to plug it into a power inverter right?

Usually power inverters have a switch that allows you to cut the power.

I say go with the slim. I was able to fit my slim ps2, 3 games, and 2 wireless controllers in my glovebox all at once. (And 2 memory cards)

What i did was hook my PS2 to a power inverter, and my inverter had a rocker switch type thing on it, so i just hooked up some wires and ran the power switch for the power inverter closer to me since if you turn the inverter off the PS2 will go off. works good.

well since i have no more air bags i found out that the ps2 fits in the dash where the airbag cover used to go quite snug. if you would like pics just let me know

you need a power invertor to run it in your car since the ps2 runs off alot higher volts than the car. the invertor converts it so you can run it in your car. i have mine mounted right behind the carpet next to the passneger side fender

it really shouldnt
LED's use very little power, virtually none. I mean, i see no change in my electric bill with my ps2 plugged in and off as opposed to unplugged.

Any amount of battery used by the LED would definitely be gained back when starting the car up and letting it run for about 2 seconds. And if wired right, it wouldnt stay on when the car was off anyways. I had an LED light on my fog lights when i still had my cav, never had a battery problem except the time i left the fogs on lol.

Hey brian i seen you post and i wanted to let you in on a few tricks about the older bigger ps2.

1st. The older ps2 actually runs on 12v so it can be run off of you car without buying a power inverter. It has a power supply built in that converts 120v to 12v. I haven't actually done this but many people have. Just do a search and you will find many forums that can tell you how to do this.

2nd. It is also possible to put in a hard drive in the ps2 and run multible games without ever changing the disk! It actually boots itself off of a ps1 disk that signals a program that is loaded directly on the memory card. So all you do is restart the ps2 with the same disk in it, it goes to a menu and you pick a game and wha la you are playing a different game of your choosing. This is so awsome! Of course you have to have the originals to do this. But the games also runs 10 times faster hard drive than it does from the dvd rom. I think i have 24 games on mine and it still isn't full. But i am running a maxtor 160gb hard drive. A little expensive to do but well worth it. about 100 dollars or so.

3rd. I read that you were worried about mounting it so the disk tray would be accessable. There is also a flip top that replaces the top plastic of the ps2 and lets you insert the game from the top without using the eject tray. awsome! There are also other advantages to this also. Just do a search on this.

If you guys have any question about any of these topics i would be glad to help ya out.

thanks everyone for the help. so from looking at all of this....i can run a 1st gen ps2 without a power inverter, and it will mount good in my glove box, and it wont kill by battery. so all im going to need is the ps2 and im going to have a shop wire it up with my flip out DVD/TV thing. thanks again. if im wrong anywhere let me know. "scottbebadboy" ill probably be PMing you about some more things.

im pretty sure you need a power invertor to change the volts over

well i have the older ps2 and im running an invertor. id get one anyway. mine is only 75 bucks. if you want a pic of it and where its at, i can snap one tonight when i get home. i think its easier w/ the invertor. just wire the invertor and then you can directly plug the ps2 into that and mine also has a toggle switch on it so i can turn the invertor on or off.

how do you wire a toggle switch?

do you guys think that the 1st gen ps2 will cool off better than a newer slim because it has a bigger fan? if im getting a power inverter anyway....i might just go with a slim version. im sure my audio shop can hook up an inverter, but do i have to have it with the on off switch? and mike please take a picture of the thing for me...im not sure what the thing is or how it works. thanks again for all the help.

Hey Brian. If you get the newer slimmer ps2 i think it runs off of 7.5 or 9 volts. I'm not for sure because i fdon't own the newer one. But if that is the case then you should be able to buy an adaptor for it and it would be alot cheaper than the invertor. Just thought i would let you know man. I have seen car adaptors for them online. i can give you a few websites that carry them if you want me too.
