I'm going to mount my new Sirius StarMate into the curved dash area just above the glove box and to the right of the vents.
I have a template ready for the shape of the unit, and I know I can cut through the first layer of vinyl with my Exacto, but does anyone know offhand how much space there is to the duct behind there and how thick the dash is? What type of layering is back there behind the padding? Is it possible to cut through all the way with the exacto?
Finally, is the outer layer of vinyl going to pop up around the edges where I cut it? If so, I can plan a trim ring for that.
Thanks - I just dont feel like pulling the dash until I'm ready to begin.
I hope this turns out OK, a new dash top is expensive!
Thanks!
id just pull the dash out. only takes like 5 minutes. i would assume theres enough room though. and you most likely will need some kind of trim ring
RIP Kasey Burleson, and get well soon Chris Shelly
i think a vent runs right behind there, might not have enough room

Well the StarMate is pretty thin (about an inch)
I'm actually hoping that the vent is fairly close because I want something for the StarMate to butt up against to keep it from sinking further into the dash when you press the buttons.
I have a feeling this project is gonna be FUN...
if ya scared........... say ya scaaaaeeed !!!!

I had the Starmate, very nice unit when hooked directly to your deck!
I had mine in the vent though above the deck, so I'm no help.
just pull the dash top off , thats the best way
since your gonna have to do it any ways for the wires
when you get the trim ring see if you can attach a partial back to it so that the thing doesn't sink any further into the dash but you can still run the wiring through it. and you should be fine as far as room goes. good luck. make sure you post some pics when it's done.
