Cluster cover
Thursday, January 05, 2006 2:43 PM
Ok guys, I'm trying to seperate the plexiglass from the plastic from the cover that goes over the cluster. Anyone ever try this? It's the 2000+ kind. I've tried to bake it at 250 for 15min like you would for headlights. no luck. hell, I've even tried leaving it in for 30min.
Should I jack up the temp to 300 or maybe just break off the plexiglass so I can paint the plastic and get a fresh peice of plexi to cut to the shape of the cover and stick it on.
Has any one had any success in doing this?

Isn't it just held on with screws?

if your talkin' about the plastic piece covering the gauges, mine was just screwed on w/ 4 screws. i guess they changed it in the 00+ cavs

I did my white face gauges, and all I had to do was remove the (4) screwes . . .

I dont' remember if there were screws or just pressure clips, but I didn't have to bake my '03 one to get the clear plastic off of the gauges. I'm pretty sure that it just popped off by prying on 2-4 clips.

no no, he's talking about the part you get when you remove those 4 screws, you wind up with 4 screws, the gauge cluster itself, then the clear plexiglass cover which has the plastic bezel tha gives the gauges the round looking effect

sorry but i don't know how to separate the bezel from the plexiglass cover, they use some good glue on that

That's the part I'm talking about. Thanks for understanding.

I tried to cook it for 10 minutes at 300 the other day. It melted real bad. The plexiglass still wouldn't seperate from the plastic. Thank goodness it was a slightly broken part that I got cheap from the wreckers. Think I'll go back again next week and try to get another and try just breaking it apart.

well if your not looking to save the plexiglass part you could always just shatter it
