Passenger airbag monitor?
Wednesday, January 25, 2006 11:47 AM
Ok...I know I've seen this done before, I though it was on here. Someone has put monitor in the passenger airbag cover. I've searched and no luck. I was just wondering could help me out on any pictures, and/or installation procedures for that. Even though I probably won't tackle this one for a while, it's definetly something I want to do. Thanks

The pic belongs to me. I took the pic at Nopi here in STL back in July. I think the car belongs to somebody up near Chi-town.

Basiclly what they did to do that is take the dash top off, take out the four or five (can't remember exactly how many) 7mm screws on the front side of the air bag cover. Push that part of the cover up and just set your moniter there. It is strictly for show and would fall off if you drove with it that way.

The way I imagined it involves a gutted airbag, lots of fiberglass, linear actuators, and a pain in the ass.

I think he means the type where you make a molding that goes over the air bag that holds a screen permanently.

Yeah, I was thinkin of something more with actuators and whole nine yards. It would be awesome if it was hidden and with the push of a button, presto, cover lifts and monitor pops up. Like I said before, this one will be a while before I try and tackle it, but it's fun to dream.

and when you get in a front-end collision, the monitor will provide a nice, soft cushion for your passenger's face!

haha, yeah, I was thinkin about that. I think if you remove the passenger airbag, the driver side doesn't work as well. So might as well get a steering wheel right? You know, instead a monitor to the face, I could just fill my airbag area with jello. Then if someone got in a wreck with me they couldn't be too mad.

first off to stlwaco, it isnt just a few screws, in order to lift up the front of the air bag corner, u need to cut or pull it apart from the dash, then there are several screws further up in the dash that can be taken out remove the cover totally but to wedge in the monitor like you are talking about the screws don't need to be taken out. as far as mounting a screen there full time.... here is my suggestion.

we cut a wooden template that is the same shape and size as the air bag cover and then used wood to build a skeleton for a monitor housing. in my case we removed the monitor from the original plastic casing and put all of it inside our new housing. then we took the wooden piece and screwed it to the cover, carpeted it, then put it back on the dash.

Yes the air bag has been removed because my sensors are shot so it wanst really a big deal. I will try to get pics posted within the next few days for you to see.

Ok, I think I get what you're sayin. So you basically have it set up all the time? That's cool, I was thinkin more on the lines of keeping it like stock, then having the cover lift up to reveal the monitor though. Maybe I'm just confused, if you or anyone could get more pics up that would be awesome.
