Garage door opener

I want a visor with a garage door opener in it. How do they wire up? are they battery run or are the tapped into the car?

I opened up my "hand held" remote... wired it up to a switch that I mounted in my dash, then removed the battery and since it was a 12 volt battery, connected the battery terminals on the remote directly do the cars power. Hidden garage door opener with button where ever you want it. I LOVE it.

Never thought of that. Very interesting.

Yep... only took about 10-15 minutes and everyone who sees it is in aw. Only bad thing is, it's not removable, but well worth it in my opinion. Never have to change batteries either !

So you just drilled into the dash to mount it? Or did you use two sided tape? You don't wanna get rid of the car with that in there.

I am also interested in doing this. Can you provide a little more detail as to how it's wired into the car? Are most remote batteries the 12v kind?

Thanks!

If you were to sell the car, you could just remove the remote. Let me snap just a couple pics and then I'll try to explain in the best way I can.

Alright I know these pictures are fuzzy, but I cant take a clear picture. Heres just a couple shots at the actual remote. The switch for it is mounted down around the same area as all of the others ones (see picture 3).

The install was fairly simple. I removed all of the plastic housing around the remote to expose the actual piece and battery. Looking at the piece, you can see where there is a button that pushes in and completes the circuit in order to make the garage door open. I then turned the piece over and looked directly behind where the button was located on the remote. It was held on by 4 "prongs" (technical term) and soldered on. I left the battery attached to the remote and used a simple wire to connect the different prongs together until the light came on and the garage door opened. Once I knew which 2 ends needed to be connected to complete the circuit, I soldered on a wire and added a switch to it. I tested the switch with the battery still in place and the piece outside of the car. Once everything worked I then removed the battery, made sure I had my positive from negative and soldered wires onto where the battery contacts were. Ran the positive to an accessory in the car and grounded the other. Then found a good spot and used the handy zip tie to keep the remote in place. It's been working for well over a year.

And here is my VERY BASIC microsoft paint schematic

Questions!?

Do what I did... instead of using zip ties, use screws and put the button on your visor.

Ive never seen a garage door opener inside a visor before, but if alls you want is a button than do what this guy said:

I was talking about screwing the garage door opener under your dash since you didnt like the idea of the zip tie (it would be more "perfect"). You would have to mount the button flush into your visor, I was not suggesting screwing it in. I think it would look MUCH better than trying to fit a visor in there that doesn't belong on your car, it's not going to look right. Run the wire under the headliner and down your a pillar. It would not be hard to do and you could mount the button where ever you wanted. It gives you a lot more flexability, and you can do it all yourself with basic things that you can find anywhere. All you need is some wire and a momentary push button that you like which can be ordered online or found at radio shack. This doesn't have to look cheap. Keep us posted if you find something that works.
