flush mount stereo in 98 cavalier
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 7:31 AM
I was wondering how difficult it would be to flush mount my head unit in my 98 cavy. If someone could give me step by step instructions or give me a link to a post it would be a lot of help.

flush to which piece?? if you mean the outer edge, the only way is to fiberglass

Yes to the edge, instead of having it stick out an inch and a half. Not sure but i could have sworn I saw some with it flush mounted without fiberglass, I think it was a 99 z24. I know newer cavs can be, but the ones I saw still had hvac controlls on top. Not sure if the hvac plumbing is different than mine or what. Thanks.

chances are good you probalby can but most likely you will have to do some cutting behind the radio area to allow you to go a bit deeper. its been a while since ive seen a 98 radio opening so i'll let others add to this

I can barely squeeze the wiring into the dash in mine, definetly would have to cut to mount the whole thing deeper.

i did this. when you take apart your dash and take your cd player out. you look where the CD player goes, underneath that of coars is your ashtray. if you look towards the back you can see what you have to cut to make it work. just DONT cut through the heater box. use a dremel to kut away the plastic that seperates the cd player from the ashtray. if you have any more questions or would be able to take a pik of inside the dash i could show you what i mean better.

Cut into the ashtray? How would that help?

youdont cut in to the ashtray. on the back of the stock stereo. thers like a niple that sticks out. when the stereo is installed the nipple slides in to a hole in the back of the dash right in front of the heater box. thers a tab inside the dash wich is the hole. you cut that. and some more off. as i said. if i had a picture of inside the dash. it would be ALOT easier

Yes, that is deffinatelly nice, I probably wont be able to tear apart the dash and trim untill friday, as I need to work all day 2morrow and thursday, but by then I should be able to get a pic of inside if it will help. Hopefully the junk digital camera I have will take a decent one...

Our Headunit flushmount are bolted just like the OEM unit using the same holes and brackets. It's not made like the part you showed.

i bought one of those adapters from circuit city. it came in like a big set with 3 different plates. . . flush, 1/2 in, and 1 in i think. its a pain to stuff those wires in there and it barely fits

Other than the fact that the black one is ugly (I have one)
they mount the same and I wouldn't have to change anything
insdie the dash right?

You would have to do a little trimming inside the dash since the aftermarket headunits are deeper than the GM headunits.

You can get these in a wide range of colors, engraving, customized,...
