LED Question
Monday, April 10, 2006 4:00 PM
Can someone please explain to me why all the "Yellow" LEDs are orange? And, where I can get some true yellow LEDs, or a way to make the white ones yellow?

I spent some time wiring the LEDs only to hook them up and see that they are NOT yellow. Yes I should have tried them first, but I didn't. Now I'm stuck with crappy orange lights. Any suggestions on what to do now?

That's where I got the ones I have. I even posted this question on their forums...

Its about the frequency of the light emitted.

I'm in the process of finding a chart that has an average frequency for each color... might not be able to get to it till tomorrow though (migraine's suck)

Were the ones that you purchased advertised as "yellow" or "amber"

Ah, would've helped if you had said where you got them in your original post. Now I see your post over there.

I dunno, you could try painting or putting some sort of film over white LEDs to change the color.

there is a chance you are putting too much voltage into them

These LEDs were pre-wired with resistors already and were advertised as yellow and even have an area of the package colored yellow for the illiterates.... I've been careful to avoid the "amber" lights. . I had 4 of them wired in series. And it's not just these. I bought some LEDs for my HVAC from superbright (i think) that were advertised as yellow and they are the same crap orange...

Yeah, it's real tough when it comes to the yellow/amber issue for advertising as the wavelengths are so close...

Here's the chart I was inferring about:

So by the looks of that chart I should be looking for 585nm wavelength LEDs, right?

right. Now the fun part...

Sometimes, the sellers don't add on the wavelengths, if they don't move on and find another supplier.

I found a site where it shows the following info for yellow LEDs:

Wavelength
Min - 570
Typical - 585
Max -595

Forward Voltage
Min - 2.0
Typical - 2.4
Max - 2.8

Does this mean I may be able to hook more up together to lower the voltage to the ones I have?
I have 20 of these (gives the specs on the LEDs) but pre-wired.
Do I need to strip the resisters off and wire 6 of them together? Any suggestions?

Here's another one of those charts, looks like it has a few more colors on it

Unfortunately, the wavelength can't be changed, unless they are "overdriven," and that's not a true change. The eavelength itself is based on the materials used in construction of the LED.

The site that you found the above information would be a good source to purchase from, either that or LSDiodes.

Speaking of LED's......does anybody know of some good online schematics for making your own LED lightbars (kinda like rope-lights).

I havent touched electronics in 15 years, but with a couple of ideas I have in mind I think its time to re-teach myself.

WOW, those are some good sites.........

As far as the amber vs the yellow color go, i gather your car is yellow, and you are not using it any sort of blinker, or anything like that.
Try this, though see what it looks like when you shine the led at a white pice of paper, and see if it reflects an amber color........

As far as the led strips go, try this site out !!!

I understand that the wavelength can't be changed, but can they be underpowered? The info I posted were all for the same LED, not 3 different ones. That's why I thought about underpowering them.

If I put a larger resistor on them I can bring the volts that are provided down, right?

I don't really want to buy them from the ebay store I found them on, they just provided some decent info.

Buzz <-- My car is black and I'm doing the interior black with yellow highlights and lighting (I'll have pics someday...). I did shine the LEDs on white paper, it was still crappy orange...

They can be underpowered using a higher rated resistor, but that still isn't going to change the color output...

Overpowering orange LED's makes them a reddish orange, that I know for sure.

also, if you underpower led's, most time, they all will not light up evenly

So I figure that I'm S.O.L. as far as getting a nice yellow glow in my car. Any suggestions on where to go now? I'm pissed and can't think....

I'll do some asking around and see what I can find as far as yellow LED's go

Here's a few sites:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/leds.htm

http://www.ledsupply.com/l4-0-y5th30-1.html

http://www.ledtronics.com/ds/L200-Y3K/

They all match the above specs for yellow, and I know for a fact superbrightleds.com's LED's are yellow and not amber
