Fiberglass interior trim.
Sunday, April 16, 2006 11:41 AM

Started making the interior trim for my dash center console. I know I just could have painted the pieces and would be much easier but I just wanted to learn and gain some experience with fiberglass since this is the first time working with it.

Still need to cut some pieces to fit right, sand it and add body filler to fill the little holes from the air bubbles.
Will post more pictures later.

what was the point of doing that?

it seems like you just wanted a glass look? you better off sanding down the textures on those pieces then paint them.

but nice work on making the molds

What I want is a trim around the radio, it wont cover all the center console piece. I know its much easier sanding the textures and painting it, but I didn't wanted to sand the pieces because once I sand them I need to paint it completely. But by making it out of fiberglass I can change the color whenerver I want without damaging the console, just need to take out the trim and paint it. I whant a diferent llok without sanding any part of the dash or interior.

This are the lates pictures of the fiberglass faceplate.

I sanded it a little bit, still need to add some fiberglass in some areas so it can fit better. It also needs body filler.

Comming along. Have to work on the edges some to make them straight, but looks good so far.

I think it will be easier just to repaint the radio bezel piece instead of doing the "faceplate" fiberglass parts.

if you want to re-paint the fiberglass pieces, what is the difference in re-painting the radio bezel piece?

In all honesty, the interior would look cleaner without the fiberglass overlays.

I know it would be easier just to paint the bezel, but I don't want to damage it by sanding it. By making in in fiberglass I can change the color when ever I want, and If I got tired of the look of it I could just take it out and don't have to buy another bezel because I paint over it. It's really hard to find used parts for my car where I live, so if I paint over it and I want the stock look I will have a hard time finding a used bezel. And the other reason I decided to do it this way was to learn how to work with fiberglass.

Thanks for your opinions.

a quick tip.

when your fiberglassing anything and you have alot of cutting/trim work in your piece (such as the ones you made). Before the fiberglass cures, and gets hard...wait for a little while before it's fully hard yet still soft enough to run an Xacto knife through it. This will make the trimming alot easier and faster for you. The key is timing...too soon well it won't cut too nicely and it will ruin the shape...too late, then the knife wont pass through it.

any more progress pics? It's still a good first time, so don't get discouraged.

big poppa: thanks for the tip.

Flashback 33: I'm also using a dremel to cut and shape the fiberglass, it really makes the joba easy.

No more updates for now. haven't been able to work on the piece beacuse of college final tests.

Any tip will be accepted, As said before thanks for your opinions.

any updated pics. now? i had problems with my mixture hardning to fast at first. i was just doing the stock a pillars so i just figureed i only needed about three ounces. i believe the instructions on the can of resign said something like 12 drops of hardner per ounce of resign. that was way to much. another factor was that it was like 100 degrees outside. anyways, i started adding about 5 drops of hardner per ounce of resign. that seemed to work alot better.

This are the latest pictures of the trim with the new head unit

After fixing some imperfections, I will add body filler and then paint it. Still deciding on what color will I paint the piece. Between white or dark silver.
Haven't had time to continue working on it. Hopefully will start working on it again during the next 2 weeks.

As far as how it looks, I agree with big poppa that your interior would look much cleaner if you had just repainted it. But I understand your wanting to learn. I think you should've made a mold of the whole pieces rather than just a section of it. Then remove the stock piece and put the fiberglass one in. That way you don't just have that faceplate sticking out. Commin along tho.

I've been thinking that for some time, about how the dash would look with the piece on, and both of you are right (big poppa and SliMMaTiC) the dash would really look cleaner with out a piece sticking out. but since I started the piece, I think I should finish it so I can really know how it would look, Maybe when I finish it I will like it looks. At least I gain some experience on working with fiberglass even if i like or don't like the finished product.
Thanks for your opinions.

You could probably add fiberglass to the piece to finish making it a mold. More experience!

Never finished it. I thought that the console looks better without anything attached to it. Started this project to learn how to fiberglass. That was my first try.
