ok, I know some time ago, someone said they had the device to etch glass, or plexi, something hard and clear. They had done a glove box door cover that said something like "sunfire" or something I believe. In any case, does anyone know who it was? or if anyone can do that sort of thing currently on j-body? and if not, where can I go? for this moment, all I need is a approximately 2" glass/plexi/acrylic disc, not very deep (sub1/4"), with the pontiac emblem laser etched into it. (preferably in 3d), hell, I'll even compromise on a rear etched and frosted version, so long as theirs some depth to the emblem. So, all that being said, anyone know anything useful? I would attempt this all by myself, but I don't want a medicre piece.
Dang man, I would love to do that....but I'm still trying to convince my boss to let me try out cutting plastics/plexiglass on our laser. All we do is steel, and I think that's all the laser was built for but I would still love to try to cut plastics JUST for this reason, you have a great idea man! I hope you find someone to do it for ya!
If the laser was meant for stell plastic will just melt into an ooze.
Well, we have the capabilities to turn the laser anywhere from 1Watt or power all the way to 4000Watts....and we do use it to melt some of the plastic thats on metal....I know we have some materials that the laser was made to cut and I think it says Glass and Plastic....but it's in german like everything else on this darn thing and I don't know how to read german. I don't know though....just a guess but I think lasers that cut plastics need a certain ventilation system due to gases and such that is released, so I might just let it be and stick to metal.
I don't know if it'll work but have you looked up CNC shops or like a place that has a waterjet? I don't know if those will work but they might, give it a shot I guess....can't hurt to ask. ::shrugs::
i think i know what your talking about, a long time ago somone was selling armrests that lit up and could say like cavalier or sunfire, or have the bowtie light up...the armrest was f/g and the light up part was plexi, is that maybe what you mean?
yes, thats exactly what i mean! just a design etched into it so you can see it upon lightup.
The only thing i have seen first hand is acid etching on car windows (glass) Its a piece of tracing paper with the numbers cut out and a bingo dabber type bottle with the acid inside as for a laser on a window hmmm I've never seen it. For one the laser would make a weird prism affect on the window .. and two I've seen what a little amount of heat will do to the resin inside a safety window ..it shatters...as for the armrest now thats trick . i'm currently working on having the face (eddie) from Iron maiden come twisting out of my dash and have it looking like the plastic is stretching as the face is coming out i'm 30 hours into it i figure 50 more with the airbrushing i'm thinking the armrest now are next let us know if you find the dealer..
