The seatbelts in my 98 have finally started to call it quits, the drivers side anyway. They dont recoil so well anymore. I figure Im looking at one of two things, either the spring in it is just worn out, or its got gobs of dust and crap in there and they just need some KY or anal eaze in there.
I know I'll need to pull the plastic pillar piece off, but........I mean, Im not gonna have to gut the entire car to get it off am I? Thats gonna suck if I have to pull half the car apart just to get that pillar off to get access to the seatbelt assembly. Oh, and lemme guess, it's all Torx right?

seatbelts use this big weird shaped bolt... its not quite torx, its a special tool. see if autozone lets u rent it...
It is a torx bit. You are going to have to disasemble a little bit to get to it. Mine do the same so let us know what you did to fix it. I am debating just trying to buy some low milage ones from a wrecked cav in a junkyard. I would just do it myself but I just got my interior put back together, and I am fed up with messing with my car for awhile.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
ya mines starting to do it aswell going ot head to the yard and look for a low mile j-body plz if anyone knows a way to fix it post it up!!!
I had one in a 1989 s-10 years ago that did that and I used a small brush and removed the dirt and dust out of the gears on side of ratching part of seat belt. I then tripped catch on side of seat belt housing and pulled seat belt all the way out and sprayed the moving parts of seat belt assembly with w-d40 it worked fine after that. Just a suggestion don't know if you're seat belt is built like that or not but most gm cars are. i use to work at gm dealership. Hope this helps.
Try getting some silicone spray from a auto parts store and spray the belt. Pull the belt all the way out and spray it as it goes back in. We do that at my work all the time usually works pretty good. Also try getiing some thin wire and run it back and forth across the spot the hold the belt on the B-pillar. That will clean all the built up crap off.
I worked on it some today. I found that the pillar panel in my car is just a clip on. So, I pried easily on the part, no flathead needed. I pried at the top and the bottom, and it came off relatively easily. The bottom is kept in place by the little piece of sill trim to protect the rocker as you step in.
The seatbelt assembly is all the way at the bottom near the floor, so prying out the pillar from the sill piece will help greatly to get to it. With the seatbelt completely spooled out, I was able to shoot some lube into the workings. It seems to have helped about somewhat. It's about 50% back to normal. Maybe with a little time it'll loosen up some more. Maybe Im on crack. I think ultimately the spring is worn out, so a new one will be the way to go. It's a Torx screw as mentioned earlier, on the bottom of the assembly, and another one at the "keeper" up by the roof.
I was gonna shoot a pic, but the condition of things inside the car is almost embarrassing to post here. It's really dirty, so no pix. BUT, I'll probably be selling my Jeep soon and putting some time into cleaning the Sunfire up.
