This may be a very, very stupid question...but I just got my 96 Cavalier (base trim as mentioned above) and it's getting registered tomorrow...only...I drove it today at night for the first time and noticed the shifter console does not light up with the exterior lights being on.

Looking at the console with the interior light on, I couldn't tell if it was meant to light up or not.

Could someone please tell me if the lights are just out or if this is normal?

it is not meant to light up. only in the cluster does it light up. on the console itself its just painted on there and there isnt any way you could really make it light up.

*Whew!* Thank you!!! I was pretty scared there! Okay, so I just have to keep an eye on the dash.

It will take a while to get used to, but at least it's normal!
