I am having problems with the trip odometer on my 1999 Pontiac Sunfire. It is a digital odometer and when I press the button to switch it to trip odometer mode, it doesn't do anything. Once in awhile it will work and also when it is really cold it will work.... has anyone else had this problem? would it be safe to clean the 'button' with alcohol?
Replace the guage cluster. It will work then.

If I recall correctly, replacing the guage cluster will alter the mileage reading unless it's reset by a dealer because the mileage is stored within the gauge cluster rather than elsewhere in the car.
I have a 99 sunfire and the same thing happened to mine back in 2001, dealer replaced it and I believed FieroGT42 is right, dealer has to reset it, I know this because when dealer reset mine , it was weird car went in it had 18,985 miles, when I got it back in 2 hours, it read 18,200!!! Is it me or was I wrong not to say anything, I feel bad.
