Just did the cluster swap today (I think from a 95 model) since my '99 base model didn't have the tach. Did the passlock relearn and everything works but the fuel guage. I have seen a couple people say this has happened to them, but haven't heard of any fix for it. If any one has an answer I would appreciate it.
so you went from a digital odometer to a analog? it wont work as far as i know since they are 2 completly diff clusters you need a cluster from a 98 or 99 to make it work..phil
Fill the tank. Take off the needle (95-99 only). Start the car. Put the needle back where it's supposed to be at full. Drive. See if it works. If it doesn't, then the cluster isn't getting a fuel level signal it recognizes.

I did go from digital to analog and the odometer does work at least. Also I was at a half tank before the cluster swap, and that's where I put the needle after it seemed like the new cluster fuel guage wasn't working. Filled the car up to full and the guage hasn't moved. I was checking autometer's website and they had a gm electric fuel guage for 85-97 vehicles, but from after 98-on it said it might not work. I'm thinking there's either a difference in the sending unit signal or microprocessor on the pcb for 97 and earlier cavaliers which I think is what you're getting at Raptor.
Just rechecked the autometer site and it show GM using 0-90 ohm sending units up to '97 and '98-up possibly having 40-250 ohm sending units. I'm going to try swapping out only the fuel guages from both clusters and hope the PCB is not affected if it is a case of different sending unit signals.
shouldnt be a problem. i went from 96 cluster to 98 and mine works fine. havent had a prblem. abd you should be fine switching the gauge itself. shouldnt hurt anything. good luck
I have a problem with my swap though. I have a 96 5 speed with no tach and put a cluster from a 97-98 automatic with tach and the only thing that works are the temp and fuel guages. What could be the problem if they are supposed to be interchangeable?
