Damn?! Looks like nothing happend to it in the first place. Very nice job on that. How long did it take getting the entire dash out it it?
Looks great. And, probably will squeak a lot less too.
Somewhere in the neighborhood of two to three hours. I split it up into two days with the first getting everything out of the way and the second unbolting the dash and having someone help me snatch it out. I put it back in by myself, but as you can see in the second pic it was a clean break and I didn't want to do more damage taking it out by myself. Honestly it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It should definitely be quieter too! One part was hitting the windshield when I'd hit a bump, lol.
Awesome Job... Glad to see some other people taking this route to fix the dash. Looks better than new!
that is a great idea.....good job!!
Appreciate all the comments. Totally agree with Michael Hearn and Sndsgood. If your dash is cracking just set aside a few days and fix it as it's really not that hard.
i took care of mine.... took the dash out and put a fires dash in... just took awhile longer
where do you go about getting vinyl like that? Do you think I could find something that would match my tan interior? My dash cracks have really been starting to bug me lately and that looks really good.
I went to a local Hancock fabrics. Kind of luck of the draw on what colors although a place might order it. If you have a fabric store you can go to bring a piece of the interior like the fuse panel cover to help match up the color. The black I used is a little darker than the dash, but you can get away with it on the grey interiors. The stuff I got has like a woven backing on it instead of loose fiber and was fairly stretchable if that's any help.
wow... simply amazing. thats some really good and PROFESSIONAL work you have done there man. it looks great, u sir have a talent.
UFlip06 said it best: Just look underneath the engine and if you see big hairy balls it's a 2.4 Twin Cam, if they're shaved it's an Ecotec and if you see nothing it's a 2200!

Thanks! I've never done anything special interior wise. I'm so lazy I don't even cover sub boxes with carpet, and was pretty surprised with how well it turned out.
Wow dude that does look really awesome.

Nice work man, I was wondering if you had finished that project.
Did gm do anything about this after they figured out that this was happening? Some kind of recall? But anyways looks good I might get out and do mine if it warms up.
Outstanding! I keep hesitating to do this one, but I'm getting kitted this year and might as well clean it all up inside and out. Is the wiring back there a hassle or is it all underneath the dash?
thats amazing... WHY DO ALL CAV DASHES CRACK LIKE THAT!? mine did that about 6 months ago, ive dealt with it, how hard was that to do?
Only hassle with the wiring imho is the little safety clip things that I hate, but there's really not that many connectors. I really don't think it's that hard to get the dash out. Easier than doing my header (2200, thought I was going to have to pull the freaking radiator out for room) or front swaybar. I've seen some cavs with the crack and others older than mine without it so I don't know what's going on. A friend of mine has had two cavs and neither did this. I used rubber washers on both sides of the two mounting locations up near the windshield when I put it back together, but hopefully I've seen the last dash crack.

I never had mine crack. first time i took the dash cover off to put my stereo in my car I loosened all the bolts I could get to at the top of the dash and snugged them down.

Is it even worth replacing the trim piece or is it just gonna crack again? Mine has two cracks in it and it only had one when i bought it a year ago. I wanna replace but after pulling the entire dash aprt to wire my subs im not that eager to pull it all apart again if its gonna crack.
